Re: Planking? Owling? Why Not?
I think it's funny...and since it's relatively harmless, it's no biggie. Just another teenage trend.

I saw a picture of someone doing it on a shopping cart in a supermarket.

Not harmless, and not just for teens I'm afraid. People have fallen to their death trying to plank from extreme places. They say they get a rush when they plank from these crazy places, have a picture taken, and posted on planking web sites, facebook, and even discussion boards.
Some ethnic groups take offense to it. The term planking referred to slavery.
Often the ships, also known as Guineamen, transported hundreds of slaves, who were chained tightly to plank beds. For example, the slave ship Henrietta Marie carried about 200 slaves on the long Middle Passage. They were confined to cargo holds with each slave chained with little room to move.
ORIGIN: This all derives from back when slaves were transported to the United States on big slave ships back in the day. Slaves were force to lay face down with their arms by their side and their wrist chained to their waist. Some were even stacked on top of each other with no room to move. Keep in mind there were not any restrooms and they were exposed to bodily fluids, etc. Not many of the slaves survived, many died from dehydration and disease.

I had never heard of owling.

I think that this is a fun thing that teenagers do. If older people want to get "into" it, more power to them. Planking to me is laying in a soft bed!

I will post a pic of me Owling... give me time. I am older than 25, but a sophomoric teenager inside - so get over it!
