Technically you aren't killing people. There are some that play games like that and see themselves "killing others", but a lot of people are in it for the strategy and team work. It's pretty exhilarating to win a game because you and your buddies worked as a team.

What's interesting is they did a study with children who were in the hospital and involved with intense pain. They found that if they let the child play a Video Game, the dopamine rush helped curb the pain and some kids didn't even need medication.
This is a two edged sword. If dopamine is released, this natural morphine affect in our bodies becomes desired when we face the other pains in life, including emotional pain. This "Escape" seems to correlate with drug use and this is why the game becomes addictive.
Again, comparing this with TV, I see a great controversy within Religious groups who stand for one thing but allow another which may be far worse.

Exactly, it can be a form of self medication. Which is why I say for some people there may have already been an issue that for them video games was like someone else turning to alcohol or drugs...or even chocolate :-)

Re: Video Games vs Television
Yeah, it sounds like an addiction....if it wasn't video games....he would have used something else instead.
My (adult) kids are online all the time. Except when they're not...for classes or to read a book or something. It drives me crazy but I've given up. I just want them to be balanced.

Re: Video Games vs Television
We limit both at very near zero!
I agree, there is very little good that comes out of either. Much rather play a game (non computerized) as a family and interact socially and physically with real people.... that's what is happening tonight.

About the only game I am playing right now is Desktop Defender on Facebook. It is essentially the same as Desktop Tower Defense.

When my kids were quite young, video games had a limit of 20 minutes a day. You can see where that got me.

That's what happened with my son. Minutes turned into hours, hours into days...
I also got frustrated. I put the ball in his court, and I got lucky. He saw he was having a problem and decided to make the change.
The snowball is when you see the problem growing and out of contol. You put limits on the game, and the limits are ignored. I've talked to so many parents who threw in the towel. Some figured, hey, at least my kid is at home.
In my research, the age of Video Game addiction and the dramatic downfall takes place with men and women in their 30's. This shows, much of what happens may be from what kids picked up when they were young.
Good luck on your "Limits". If you get the chance, look over this article by Focus on the Family. Dr Dobson has tried to tackle this issue, and what he uncovered even baffled him.

Here is an excerpt from Focus on the Family and the book, Playstation Nation, giving the 8 warning signs that may indicate your child has a problem.
