It would appear that the Muslim Al-Mahdi does what Christians expect the Antichrist to do. What will be the fallout if one appears claiming to be Al-Mahdi and has false miracles or lies that appear to back him up? Global Jihad? Global unrest? As for the mark of the beast, in Muslim countries many food industries have to display the Halal to verify that they are selling food according to Islamic law. Similar measures could be taken under the Al-Mahdi. A simple tattoo or branding would set those fallowing the Al-Mahdi and those who are resisting his power apart.
