Re: Potential 2010 Resolution
Boy.....looks like Billy Cole slipped out just before the door closed. To bad for Mark Morgan, Jack Cunningham, Paul Mooney, Murrell Ewing and a host of other preachers. I wonder if they will follow through and kick out all these grossly fat preachers. Who believes that? lol.....
The UPC is becoming so much like the U.S. Congress that its frightening..........

Re: Potential 2010 Resolution
We have discussed this topic many times, and never really get anywhere with it because a lot of us overweight preachers just laugh the whole issue off.
It's kind of like the "righteous" lie. We justify it because it benefits us personally.
It's a sin we wink at because we really, really like food.

And that used to be just about all Pentecostals were allowed to do.... eat.
Seriously, though, I think this is a symptom of what happens when things are just outright forbidden, instead of teaching moderation and discernment. TV could be completely forbidden - no moderation needed. Dancing, drinking, going to theaters, shows, etc. etc. All simply forbidden. If something had the potential for harm, we just outlawed it completely.
BUT. You can't outlaw eating. So, there has been basically no teaching on it at all, because doing things in moderation isn't a big doctrine in our churches. It's pretty much been all or nothing. Either it's completely a sin, or it's not a sin.
I think as we begin to teach moderation and controlling the lusts of the flesh more - television in moderation, internet in moderation, entertainment with discernment and moderation.... then I think it will open the door to teach about eating in moderation.

Some excellent points you make.
It's easy to believe all alcohol is sin when we have no real self control...
after all we saw bro Johnny crawl inside the bottle and backslide after he took a sip...
Same is true about several other issues - it's self-fulfilling prophecy.

Re: Potential 2010 Resolution
It would be interesting to be a fly on the wall if this was ever submitted to the Resolution Committee.

Too often we've not been taught to be a moderate people. We've been radical - ban it! Completely! Don't touch it!
So, we too often don't know how to handle things in moderation.
Hopefully we can do better about learning this skill in all areas of our lives.
