I have a friend who started working with the sound a couple years ago. He was great at running the board, but could also be somewhat indifferent to the singers.
If a singer was off-key their mic was lowered in the house speakers, but the singer's in-ear was left the same. That way, the offending off-key voice couldn't be heard by the audience, but the singer wouldn't notice.
There was once when I had the solo to the song and the worship leader started doing this kirk franklin talk-sing thing while I was singing the solo part ... suddenly, his mic just went dead. Of course, he was the type that would stop and pound on the mic head with his hand, lift it in the air and wave it to get the sound techs attention ... in this case, he just got a thumbs up from the sound booth.
He did a great job with the sound and aside from the occasional complaint from a singer - there were no complaints from the audience as there was before he took it over.
