Re: What A Gyp!

Ron,
It's a sad sad truism, but they up the price for all you Canadians....
I always noticed that when purchasing patterns or paperbacks, a US price and then the disclaimer, In Canada...and a slighty higher price.

It's just not fair!!!

That is because of the difference in country money values. If things don't change it will be the other way around.

This is wrong on so many levels I don't even know how to respond. Every person is made in God's image and worthy of respect. Does the story of the good Samaritan ring a bell?

You seem to be both gullible and off the mark.

I have been gypped by gypsies and also had a death threat from them.

I will call it truthfully as it was.

The term "Gypsie" is applied today to many different types of itinerant grifters. I think Michlow had the Romani people of Europe and the Middle East in mind specifically when he asked for some compassion to be shown.

The term "Gypsie" comes from the belief that the Romani originated in Egypt. The French were under the mistaken assumption that they came from Bohemia (modern Czech Republic) and so the term "bohemian" has been erroneously used for centuries.

I'm sorry for your unfortunate experiences, but was it actually occasioned by an ethnic Romani, or just some random swindler?

You seem to be a bit ignorant as to who are actually gypsies. Most populations are actually found in various Europe and middle eastern countries, and not in South Africa. I'm not actually sure how what you posted has anything to do with the etymology of the word "gyp".

My only intention in posting was that some people may be using the term in ignorance, not understanding the origins. However, I find it very sad and disappointing that you would intentionally use a racial slur.

Now you call me ignorant?
You are dishonest. One example is the tent dwelling gypsies that camped down the road in the country. They came by every few years and were known as gypsies. We do have gypsies in America today. Many don't give education to their children. Gyp is a verb. It is a behavior that is observible that has been associated with gypsies.

Today some go around the country and recoat driveways or do roofing. They take money in andvance and disappear.

Quote:
GLADSTONE, Mo. -- Police in Gladstone are warning residents about a so-called "gypsy clan" involved in home improvement scams in the Midwest.

Police said the scammers are preying on the elderly by going to their homes and convincing them they need their driveways sealed or roofs repaired.

Investigators said the group has pulled off scams in the area before and they're believed to be back in town.

Brandon G. Swartz, 19, of Joplin, was charged with financially exploiting the elderly. In December 2007, Swartz was paid for a roofing job in Gladstone that was never completed, police said.

Alford J. Jeffery, 20, of Carthage, is accused of tricking a Gladstone woman out of money for roofing supplies. Police said Jeffery saw a roofing sign in the yard and passed himself off as the son of the owner of the roofing company doing the job.
we are not talking about other countries. Someone posted about getting 'gypped".

Don't hi jack the topic and start preaching on political correctness.

It is about amazon gyping a customer. Guess what, Amazon gyps my state. They have a warehouse they ship from in state and do not charge state sales tax to locals. They gyp our state.
