I seriously doubt this would be happening - at least to this degree, if McCain/Palin were about to take office.

I dunno. The very first thing Obama did after winning the election was to name Rahm Emmanuel as chief of staff. RE is the guy who serves as a volunteer in the Israeli Defense Forces when he's not chopping up politicos here in the States. Any qualms I had about Obama and Israel were lifted when RE was announced. Not that I like the guy - but I respect him and trust him as far as US policy toward Israel is concerned.
That being said, Israel's relationship with Repubs is often a bit more complex. The Bush family has been personal friends with the Saudi royal family for generations - and the al Sauds have always been bitter toward Israel.
And Israel isn't the genius at making the best use of time- from a military perspective. They pussyfooted around the Hezbollah issue and paid for it. They are subject to intense international pressures to sit idly by and get shot at. And even their domestic situation isn't really helpful.
They've got the Haaretz-style liberal Zionists who no longer dream of a promised land and just want to be liked by their friends in the Paris coffee shops. The've got even more radical Leftist groups like "PeaceNow" who openly provide aid for terrorists.
On the other hand they've got the ultra-orthodox who demand, and get exemption from military service so that they can stay home, live off a govt subsidy reading Torah scrolls and making more little ultra-orthodox babies who will refuse military service when they are of age. Most of these groups don't even believe that the State of Israel has a right to exist.
Somehow, Israel has to walk through this domestic minefield before they can even get out to face the terrorists. They have a real identity crisis going on that plays to their enemies. The good people there need our support and encouragement.
