3 very wise considerations. I have looked into a pellet press where you can make your own pellets from sawdust, leaves, grass clippings etc. Any biomass material.
But... thanks for these things to consider. They are definitely worthy of consideration.

Then you should go "green". These can be very dirty for the environment, but the newer ones are burning very clean - with a voluntary EPA compliance by 2010.
Check out Central Boiler.... they have the E-Classic 2300, the outdoor wood furnace...
"that shatters virtually every preconceived notion about emissions and efficiencies of wood heating. The E-Classic 2300 uses a three-stage combustion process to burn wood so completely that combustion efficiencies approach 100%."

I plan to get one to heat my home 3000 sq ft, my office 1200 sq ft, pool (when I get it), and all hot water.

What about solar panels? Are they maybe too expensive?

great concept that is being made more affordable all the time - but you are right - still more expensive than other alternative energy.

I love our fireplace, but with my medical condition it makes it harder to breath when we use it. The wood burning stove is better. My husband has had an idea to run a pipe up the fireplace and use the wood burning stove. But that would be a lot of remodeling in this old house.

Re: Just Got My Gas Bill!
I am partial to burning wood for fuel- possibly because it's related to my livelihood - but with the newer technology it's also an environmentally clean practice. Wood is a renewable resource, when burned, it results in no net carbon dioxide increase. Carbon dioxide occurs naturally when trees are allowed to rot on the forest floor, so burning wood can actually decrease the carbon dioxide.
Burning oil and gas, release carbon dioxide which otherwise would stay trapped on the inside the earth.

A good airtight stove, with outside air connected should solve the poor indoor air quality related to wood burning.
