Re: Overcoming Lust - Easy to do?

Ron,
You're either not taking this post seriously, or you have a very simplistic answer. Knowing "fat guys" that would kill over a biscuit seems rather hard to believe, and I suspect there is much hyperbole in your answer.

I agree about the rest of it (lust being like other addictions). I guess I was hoping for practical or spiritual solutions to overcoming.

I don't blame you for removing original post, considering the biscuit response.

JMHO. Fasting and prayer will prove useful, but not for the reasons some rah-rah Pentecostals will claim. The primary deliverance to be found will be the ablility to suffer, the wisdom to avoid tempting situations, and ability to "catch and redirect" some thoughts sooner than later, IOW, a layer of discipline that can effectively plaster over lust. But it's still there, crouching, waiting for a chance. Emotional church "deliverances" will get old after a few years. You get "The Victory" on Sunday only to experience The Reality by approximately Tuesday. Indian proverb, "Inside man lives two dogs, good dog, and bad. Whichever dog gets fed the most becomes the strongest."

Perhaps a good practical solution would be (my not even TIC) application of 1Cor7:9...."Marry a good wife, and enjoy her....feet and all!"

SOS
(not a foot guy, but I understand.)

Don't misunderstand, I know plenty of overweight persons who show all signs of the DT's when trying to come off of the food addiction.

It is the same driving force that they have to overcome: their flesh.

As it is with all lust, it is the conquering of the flesh we have to win at.

One has to not only make up their mind it is what they will do but also realize it will be a life long diligence.

It will take faith and persistence, nothing more: nothing less.

Ron

Re: Overcoming Lust - Easy to do?

Romans 6 through 7 gives the key to victgory over the flesh. Calling upon God to empower us to resist it. Ro 6:13, is the nutshell. We have to realize we're dead to sin, first. And then reckon it to be true for us personally, and then yield to God as one dead to sin and alive to God so He can empower us. We must udnerstand overcoming is a possibility, so long as we walk after the Spirit we will not sin.

Re: Overcoming Lust - Easy to do?

Is it easy? No.
Is it possible to no longer be controlled by sinful lusts? Yes.

Lust means desire. Lust in and of itself is not sin.
The bible says we should lust after righteousness and the things of God.

It is sinful lusts, that lead to evil/sinful imaginations/deeds that are wrong.

You are not guilty of being tempted, you are guilty of giving into the temptation.

We all have lust issues, though the things we lust for are not always the same.

What I have found personally is that it takes determination and desire to change. It takes a realization and acceptance that we cannot do it on our own, we absolutely must have Gods help.
We absolutely must surrender our will to God, realizing that we have belonged to him all along. We are not our own, we are his possessions, and we must surrender our will to him and strive to live the life he has given us as he desires us to live it.

You cannot give in to the lies of the enemy telling you that you failed, its over, that's what you are and you will never change.

It may be what you are, but YOU CAN CHANGE with God.
Never give up, if you are sincere, and surrender to God asking and allowing him to make you what HE wants you to be, then there will come a time when you no longer find yourself controlled by your desires. It does take prayer.

And I am convinced it also takes a verbal confession to someone you know and trust, like your pastor. He doesnt need to know all the details.
But when we submit ourselves to a spiritual authority, confessing that we have a challenge in our lives, and that we want to change, to be changed by God, that breaks chains in our life. It tears out strongholds that the enemy has held onto. It is one step toward surrendering ourselves to the potters wheel so that he can make us what he desires us to be.

I'd like to recommend a book to you.

"The Joy of Recovery"
By Charles Mahaney

If you want insight, revelation, and the meat of the word of God, get that book.
