Yeah. The phone companies are behind in getting high speed out to everyone out in the country. The problem is you have to live so close to a switching station in order for the DSL to work. I have heard that they are trying to update to optical fibers for the whole network. I don't know how far out it will be before they can accomplish it though. Around here the cable company's internet service is too expensive to be competetive with the phone company. The last time I checked, they wanted something like $50 per month. I have DSL for half that. I have heard that some of the bigger cities are offering wi-fi for all the city residents. I have no idea how they are pulling that off.

I pay about $55 for cable internet, but I don't have a LAN line phone, so DSL would be way more expensive, since I'd have to pay the monthly phone bill as well as the DSL charge.

But there are lots of areas, even here, where dial-up is the only option. After having cable, there's no way I could deal with having dial-up again!

Going back to dial-up would be like going back to the stone ages! No thanks! I know you can get a no features, no long distance, plain old telephone line for around $17 from AT&T. That's what I have for my second line. I need to get one for the work I am doing from home. You could go that route, get the DSL for another $25 and still be saving a few bucks. Plus, you could use the phone line for all your local calling, saving minutes off your cell phone. The prices might be different for where you live. If I could get the DSL without having a phone line, I'd do that. As it is, I use Yahoo for all my long distance calling. They charge a penny a minute. I put $10 on it a few months ago and still have about $6 left on my balance. I've used it a lot too. I was able to drop the long distance plan I had with AT&T down to one of those minimal $10 a month plans because of it. So, what it boils down to is I have two lines I can use for local calling, one of which has a minimal long distance plan on it and the DSL, and I have the Yahoo service for my long distance calling. It's a hodgepodge type of system I've worked out, but I am saving money, so I don't have any complaints.

Does anyone know how many hours of streaming video is 375MB of info?

In regards to wireless internet, how does that work if you are in the house most of the time when using computer? Do you need an antenna for wireless internet?
Good grief, that's not much if that includes all data transfer. Just visiting a website takes data. Getting updates too.

I've downloaded game demos for that much. As far as streaming goes it depends on the file size to begin with.

Check your cell phone provider for a wireless solution.

Verizon's is capped too now I guess $59 for 5 gigs monthly

"Wireless" is confusing. My cable is "wireless", because I have a wireless router. My DSL with verizon was also wireless.

So was that company a cable provider? DSL?

You can get your lan line now through your cable internet. Many cable companies offer internet telelphone service as part of a package. Or you can go with Vonage or if you don't mind using your phone only when the PC is on use MagicJack for 20 a year...unlimited calling

That's a problem in southern Illinois. Verizon owns everything around here, and when I lived here before, it's $40 a month whether or not you ever make or receive a phone call.

In addition, I get a great deal on my cell phone, so having a LAN line is a waste of money and wouldn't save me anything. I haven't had a LAN line in several years now.

This area doesn't like Sprint either, which is what I have. In order to have cell phone service, I have to keep my phone on roam, which runs my battery down big time. But I'm committed for another year, as is my daughter. My son's contract is up, so he's switching to Verizon or Alltel as soon as my money kicks in.

For the three cell phones, I get 1500 minutes a month to share, all calls to other Sprint customers are free, long distance and roaming is free, and I pay just an extra $10 a month for my daughter's phone...the plan is $99 a month. Also, all calls after 7pm are free to anyone. There's no way I can beat that with a LAN line, and the cell phones are mobile and a wonderful convenience, as well as a necessity.

With Alltel, we can add up to 20 people between the three of us to our 'circle', meaning all calls to those people are free at any time. I'm not sure what Verizon offers in that area, so it's something for me to consider when the time comes to make a switch.

However, when I had a LAN line, I used those wonderful 10-10 numbers that were so popular! LOL!

Oh, the olden days!
