Are you telling me that I have to buy the new phone from Alltel in order for it to work on our current plan? We have a family plan. I pay $75 a month for all 3 phones. That gives me 1000 anytime minutes to share (that's been plenty so far), 1000 text messages per phone and 10 My Circle numbers. Plus anyone we call on Alltel is already free, of course.
Why do we ned to be on the same plan? See above.
Plus, since college is definately not a cheap thing, we have to keep everything else as cheap as we possibly can. Unfortunately. Boohoo!
I really like the can idea, Prax. Unfortunately, a string from Portsmouth, Ohio (in extreme southern Ohio) to Swanton, Ohio (5 miles from the Michigan line!) would be a very long string. And I just know that some fool would not recognize it for what it is and would get their scissors out and cut it. Rats!

True. Oh well

Margie, you do usually have to buy a phone from the company whose service you are going to use in order for it to work on their network. That is because those phones serial numbers get registered in that company's database.
If you have mobile to mobile and he mostly uses mobile to mobile and your nights/weekends minutes, then keeping him on your family plan should work fine. However, make sure that he keeps those times in mind and tries not to use too many of the peak minutes on the plan for chit chat. Keep a close eye on your peak minutes!
I would NOT suggest getting only 1000 text messages for a college student who has intentions on using it for communicating with several people. Kids can easily burn thousands of text messages a month very easily. Unlimited is usually best.
If you are going to get him a device that he will be using text messaging on, I would suggest one with a QWERTY keyboard. A good site for perusing through the ratings on the different devices with any service is www.phonescoop.com. I would NOT suggest getting any brand of Motorola or Treo device, as they have been known to give issues most often in my experience.

Count your blessings... They have a reputation for freezing up, especially the 755p. Even the Centros, which are better than most of the older versions, sometime have the same issues.

I hate cell phones period.
Besides they're just a passing fad.

Thanks, Oneness Woman. You've been a wealth of information and help. I appreciate it.
Anyone else have thoughts before we go ahead and purchase?
If you go to Alltel.com, you can see what phones they offer. Which would you recommend from those?

You only wish they were because you hate them. Passing fads don't last for over a decade and advance the way cell phones have. Many people have ditched their landline service in favor of going completely wireless. On wireless devices you can do everything from make phone calls to check you email, surf the internet, keep your calendar, send messages and pictures to friends, take videos, listen to the radio or your mp3s, and watch tv. Really, todays wireless devices are more like little computers. I have referred to them as "handtops" since they are really handheld computers. Cell phones are going nowhere except forward.

Margie, I tend to like the Scoop by LG and lots of people do get them for the college students. It has the QWERTY keyboard and has an mp3 player. Keep in mind that every once in a while people do have problems with them. However, in my experience, most don't.

Thanks, OW. That's the one I am seriously considering for Justin. Think it'll be the one I get
