Re: Kenneth Phillips Bishop in UPC?
CC1, why did KP leave the UPC? It has probably been stated around these parts but I never read it. Also, I have heard in various places here he would probably get back in if he had the chance...what is prohibiting him?
I have seen Sis. P on television she still wears the uniform right?

Re: Kenneth Phillips Bishop in UPC?
When the UPC passed the resolution about television programming him and Hanby got out in the late 70's.
I enjoyed hearing both Elders Phillips & Hanby back then.

From what I understand Phillips still holds more to the oneness beliefs than the other one does though. His church is still around and thriving even if it does not look like most UPC churches today. The other one does he even pastor a church any more? why is he in TN now instead of still in TX?

They are both still in Austin. Incase you missed it, in the article it says that Randy pastors the daughter/sister work of sorts on the West side of town. Randy seems to be more of the PCI mindset, but he could be somewhat undercover.

No my friend you missed it
look at who Steve is talking about.
Phillips and Hanby. Hanby is now in TN, I believe. I know he is no longer in Texas. Phillips, both of them, father and son, are still in Austin. This I know.
=)

Kenneth Phillips and Mark Hanby were probably the two most popular and successful evangelists / pastors in the UPC back in the late 60's and 70's.
Both felt strongly about using television to take the Acts 2:38 message to the world. It was a much different TV landscape back then before the 500 channel cable & satellite days.
Most towns had the three major broadcast networks, a public tv station, and perhaps an independent channel. If you had cable by the early 70's you could get pay TV channels, a few "Superstations", and CBN, the Christian Broadcasating Network.
Because of the limited number of choices out there if you were on TV there was a good chance you were going to have a pretty big audience. KP and MH saw TV as a way to take the "Jesus Name" message to the masses who might otherwise never have a chance to hear something different than the trinitarian message.
At the time there was no prohibition against preaching on TV so both KP and MH had national telecasts for a year or two before it all came to a head at the 1977 UPC General Conference.
A resolution was passed banning ministering or advertising on TV and KP and MH left the UPC and became independent pastors.

Hasn't it been said though that he is now or has denounced TV and the fact that that he left the UPC? I remember watching PCD doing something at his church on TV and there were quite a few choir members, if I remember correctly that still had the appearance, wore the uniform, that were that in the longs, skirt people...you know what I mean?
I just wonder if he laments the fact now, that he ever left and/or has a desire to get back in.

no we can not always believe what we hear. My information did come from a pretty reliable fellow, known him my whole life, he seems pretty honest and one not to bear tales. He states the same thing that you seem to have been told.
