Re: Help! Puppies!!!!

If you don't really want the responsibility is there an SPCA in your city? My wife and I have rescued before and called the SPCA. They were out the same day. They will treat what they deem to be treatable, probably spay the mother, and find all of them homes. Good luck.

Give them some "Hush Puppy" serum.

Is there anything I can or should do to make sure the puppies are healthy? The mother is very attentive, and has nursed them several times. She doesn't mind my daughter getting next to the pups, but will stand between anyone else and the puppies. (Good girl, I say!)

I have never had newborn puppies in the house before. Also, the Mother has a few ticks, and I'm wondering if I can put anything on her for that, or if that will hurt the puppies.

Anyone have any advice?

My Mother said she might keep the mommy dog, and we would like to keep one or two of the puppies and give the rest away when they're old enough. They look like a lab/hound mix. (4 blacks like the mother[lab-maybe a bit of something else], and 5 white with spots like a coon hound)

I'll post pictures later!
A few months ago we had 15 puppies. If they were all born appearing healthy then the two biggest threats they face right now is the mother accidently crushing / smothering one of them while they are all around her trying to nurse and then parvo.

Years ago we had a stray pit pull show up and had around 8 puppies that were the cutest little things you ever saw. However one by one they started dying from parvo before they got to 8 weeks old. Only one survived.

Our 15 puppies we recently had all were very healthy though and we gave them all away except for two my daughter and her husband kept and one we kept.

Sounds like you guys are doing a good job. When they get a little older you can get special puppy shampoo to help with the ticks. However you can't use regular tick shampoo for dogs as it is too strong. The label will tell you that.

There might also be special tick killing sprays for little puppies but you would have to look. I am sure normal flea and tick stuff is too strong to use on little puppies.

They will need to be dewormed. We called around and went from one vet who wanted fifteen bucks per dog for the deworming stuff to a vet who gave us enough for all 15 dogs for fifteen bucks. We just had to measure it out in the dropper.

They will need to have that deworming treatment three times between now and when they are 8 weeks old.

Re: Help! Puppies!!!!

Okay...update! First of all, I miscounted...there are 8 puppies.
4 girls, 4 boys.
4 black, 4 white with black spots and/or ears.

The Mommy dog has an appointment Monday morning to get her shots, and the vet asked me to bring in 1 puppy with her to weigh it, so they can determine how much deworming med. we'll need. I'm not sure how we're going to separate the Mommy from her puppies--we may end up taking the whole crew.

I'm going to try to give the Mom a bath this weekend in tearless puppy shampoo...Oh, and the vet said that Frontline plus is fine for lactating females. She doesn't actually have any fleas, though...I checked very thoroughly. I did pick off a few ticks, but I'm pretty sure I got them all. However, since she has to go outside, the Frontline will prevent any more ticks or fleas. My kitty cats are flea-free, so I definitely can't risk getting any fleas in our house!!! *shudder*

All the puppies are in very good health, no fleas or ticks on anyone, the puppies will have their first set of shots at 6 weeks. Also, we checked on having the mother spayed, which our vet said they can do when the puppies are 12 weeks old.

SOOOOOO...without further ado...here are the pictures!!!

Picture 1 - a few hours old, they still have mud from being under the shed.

They are now 11 days old! I'll post some more pictures in a little bit from today.

And if anyone wants to adopt a puppy....

Thanks! So far it's been an easy job...I don't know what I'm going to do once they're all moving around!!!!!

One of the puppies is starting to open his eyes (not quite...just barely cracked open)...I think by this time next week, we're going to really have our hands full.
