http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

http://free.grisoft.com/ww.download-...s-free-edition

the above are spybot and avg. both are free with free updates.

You might already have something but if they are norton you have to pay and if you have not paid then you are not getting regular almost daily updates which means your virus scanner is worthless. Same with spyware scanners

Additionally they need to be ran everynow and then. Download spybot, undate it, run immunize first then run a scan
Oh yeah, don't install teatimer if it asks you

I realize that.

I just posted the link because you were talking about using google filtering to block unwanted content. NOTHING gets past BSafe online. (Including the trojans that install those popups if you choose the option with security suite)

Is it expensive?

We have Net Nanny and it works great. It is $39.99 a year but it is worth every dime.

If you're getting pop ups as you describe you may be infected with adware. Some types are especially problematic and difficult to remove. Try Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware or Hijackthis.

If you use Hijackthis it creates a log file that can be hard to understand. Go to www.hijackthis.de and paste your log into the box. This will "parse" the log and identify the bad guys.

If you just get the pop ups from certain sites then I would simply avoid those sites. Any webmaster serving a bunch of junk deserves to be botcotted.

And I find that the Google preferences does work to block out objectionable stuff from the Google searches. Google is just a machine and can be manipulated - and there's a profit motive for some types of websites in manipulating the search results.

$49.95 for the filter. $69.95 for the filter/security suite. Read the website and see what you think.

I think it's worth every penny, because I don't have to worry about my kids or anyone else who uses our computers getting any unwanted content.

Re: Google Filtering

Also, my pastor mentioned a website yesterday morning that keeps track of all the objectionable websites that you visit, he recommended it for everyone, it helps to keep you accountable.

With this, you have to enter email addresses for info about what you visit to be sent to someone else.

It seems to me it would just be more simple to have something that blocked all questionable content. Then you wouldn't have to worry about what content was viewed, because the content couldn't get through in the first place.

That is true, but this is a free program, and I would think would be pretty affective. Just another option, especially if it something that you struggle with.

http://x3watch.com/

Info from the site says that the accountability download is $19.95 if you download it online, or you can get it on CD for $24.95.

If you want SafeEyes, which blocks content, it's $49.95.

All I know about that program is what I read on the link you posted.

BSafeOnline is what we have on our computers.
