IMO, had the disciples heard some of the prayers of Jesus, (which some evidently did) but had they really been intent on His words, they could have easily become disillusioned.

Valid and Interesting point RR.
Spiritual depth in general comes from time spent alone in the presence of God .... waiting on Him in solitude .... setting yourself apart .... willingness to listen ... willingness to go to those places spiritually speaking you can't travel to unless in one on One communication with Him.
Prayer always makes the difference.
