Re: Computer Help
Could have unplugged or loosend the wires to the sound card or loosened it from the motherboard.
If it shows nothing is there then it is not reading one period. Even with no drivers at all it should still tell you that something is there.

Try this then. If it is a card and not built into the MB, turn the PC off. Open the case. Ground yourself to the case (touch it to get rid of static). Don't touch the Mother Board. Make sure the card is properly seated in the slot. If it is try removing it and powering the PC on and then off again. Then replace the card and power back on again.
BTW, if this is a PC like a Dell or something did it come with a CD full of drivers?
If the Sound is built into the MB then perhaps it is not being enabled in the system BIOS.
Also if you did a recent install of WinXP, make sure that not only do you update all the WIndows critical updates but optional updates too which often times includes fixes for devices..
Also if this is a Dell or HP or something like that you should check their website for important updates.
If the device is not showing up at all, even with the wrong drivers the there might be something wrong with the device or that particular PCI slot. Even with wrong drivers it should show up but have a yellow warning indicating it is not properly installed

If this was a desk top I could open it and know what I was doing. However, it is an IBM t60 thinkpad laptop. I have opened it and cannot tell what is what.

Oh...then it does not have a sound card...and no device is present?
That is weird. You just reinstalled XP right? Nothing else? Did anyone flash the bios? I would check the bios to make sure the device is enabled. Also check to make sure there is not a physical switch to enable it like there often is for the wireless device
Also check HP for updates....it may have been a factory bug fixed with an update. When Xp was reinstalled the update was removed.

Re: Computer Help
Is this install of WinXp pro the original disk that came with the PC? Who installed the Hard drive? I am wondering if they messed with the BIOS..
anyones you can hit f1 I think at boot-time before XP begins to load. Look for some think that enables audio Becareful here not to change other settings..

You might need to update the bios.

Re: Computer Help
Hey, Bro...these guys are right about the bios. You need to find the latest bios or chipset update. Most likely, it will get the sound card working.
AmericanMegatrends.com is a good place to start. If you do not have one of their motherboards, they have a link you can hit to do a scan on yours. Look for the bios update link on their front page, and when you get to the page that directs you to, look for the link for esupport. That will take you to a scanner that will identify your motherboard and bios, and drivers.

I checked the Bios and found nothing about audio.
No, they did not use the original disc. It was a new hard drive. If was a local computer shop.
Also, when it tells me there are no mixer divices available when I go to programs/accessories/entertainment.
also, when I go to my divice manager, I find the following with a yellow question mark by it "audio divice on high definition audio bus".
When I start my computer it tells me it found new hardware. When I click install it tells me it cannot install the drivers for audio divice on high definition audio bus".

Thats it. Ok so you DO have a device present. You have the wrong drivers.

Open the read me file and go through it. Download the drivers on the same page and follow the instructions

How do I do this without unistalling the wrong things. Should I go to my device manager and uninstall anything that says audio and then start over?
