Understanding who it was written to, and the mindsets of who it was written to goes a long way toward actually interpreting the concepts being presented... in the way of idioms, parables, etc.
By the way... many scholars believe most of the NT was actually originally written in Hebrew, not Greek. Scholars that know Greek say that the Greek used in the NT manuscripts we have was horrible Greek. However, if substituted with Hebrew words to fit in place of their Greek equivalents, the Hebrew flows perfectly.
