Once I got a letter from the State Department of Revenue. In big red letters it said, "Because you have ignored all previous communications..." and then went on to threaten me with fines and jailing. The thing was, this was the very first letter I had ever received from them on any kind of a matter. "Ignored...??"
And then down toward the bottom it declared how much I owed in "back taxes;" $1.00. I took the day off and went down to the state office and due to the severity of my "offense" I was actually given priority. It turns out that when my wife had made out the check the previous year she transposed a couple of numbers and underpaid by $1.00.
Because it was only a dollar all of those "prior communications" were never sent to save on postage. I tried every way I could to get the man at the Revenue office to let me pay the dollar but he refused. He just deleted it from my account and apologized for the error, even though it was our error that initiated the whole thing.
