Re: Now I've heard it all
We have had to miss serveral Wednesday nights because the traffic has been so heavy. Several nights we have gotten dress and headed to church only to turn around because we were stopped in traffic for over an hour. We hae to cross a bridge to go to church and there are only three bridges that cross this river. Traffic has gotten so bad that if there is an accident in rush hour traffic backs up.

If you think there is a problem with their relationship with the Lord and that is why they are staying home, then IN LOVE approach them about that and see if there is anything you can do to help.

But to tell people that they have to give an excuse to miss church............ I'm sorry, but that kind of thing makes me crazy!

This thread was just to give us a light hearted change.
If you go back and read from the beginning there's nothing in it that said we demand that they call..It's not control...it is common courtesy.

Re: Now I've heard it all
As a courtesy and out of respect, I believe a pastor should be notified when a member is going to miss church. However, I don't believe specific details should be required or demanded. If the member offers an explanation it should be voluntary.
Likewise, pastors should inform their members, not just the board or a select few, when they are going to miss church OR be unavailable to members. Again, I don't believe specifics should be required or demanded.
IMO, when specifics are required or demanded, there are trust issues to be addressed.

But I would like to hear from others what excuses they have heard or maybe even given as an excuse.

I remember one time when I had been up very late studying the bible. And my wife had also been up very late right along with me, which almost never happens.
So when we finally went to bed I told my wife, pastor so and so is going to want to know where we were Sunday morning, so I'm going to name this bed Oklahama (we have family there and the pastor knew it).
Sure enough when we walked in the door Sunday night here came the Pastor. Where were yall this morning he asked? I said "Oh we were in Oklahoma."

Re: Now I've heard it all
IMO, people shouldn't have to make up an excuse to miss church. We all (including pastors) miss church sometime.

Re: Now I've heard it all
Here is the best of the best:
A sister called about an hour before Church and said she wasn't going to be to be at Church tonight.
I said ok...we'll pray for you!!
She could have stopped there..but no she had to go on.
The excuse was she had broken a light bulb at about 8 a.m. and she was vey tired from cleaning it up.
She said that God would understand

That is very true!!
In the few times we have been away we told the Saints that we would be gone. But we told them where we were going and when we would be back.
I think the road goes both ways.

Re: Now I've heard it all
Sometimes people will tell us when they are going to miss, but most of the time, they don't. We're okay with that. Unless they're in leadership, or have a vital role in a service, we don't expect people to call and let us know if they're going to be out. If they do, that's just an added blessing, but we don't expect it.
