If it's for personal protection, everything is a tradeoff between size and firepower, and between cost and quality.
If it's just going to be for more fun get a larger frame gun in a lighter recoiling cartridge.

Thanks! I didn't realize I wasn't as educated on choices after I started studying them. For instance, caliber. What would you suggest?

Hand gun would be my choice. Smith and Wesson or Colt. 32 or 38 cal, anything else is too big for me. Let em get close. We have a .410 and it's a beauty. You can get some pretty guns now. A lot of people don't know how heavy guns are. Maybe a 9ml for some. Point n shoot.

I can't suggest anything. I don't know you, I don't know your physical abilities, and I don't know what the intended mission for the gun is.
Generally speaking ladies are much better served by small revolvers. Smith & Wesson makes a very nice line of .38 special, .32 magnum, and .357 magnum revolvers with lightweight aluminum or Scandium/Titanium frames.
Generally speaking knowledgeable people don't like to trust their lives to .22 and .25 caliber handguns, because they aren't very powerful. They can be lethal, sure, but there is more to it than that.
Defenders want their assailants to cease assailing, not to die of infection 4 to 10 days after the confrontation.
Revolvers don't jam and there are no complicated controls for slide release, magazine release, plus anywhere from one to four safeties.
The safety on a revolver is simply the long, stiff trigger pull. They are simple and easy to operate.
In the average defensive situation the defender fires two shots, so you don't need some Glock or Beretta that holds 15 to 21 rounds of ammunition.
At the end of the day the choice is all about what you are comfortable with, and what you can shoot accurately. The most powerful handgun in the world does you no good if you can't hit what you're aimin' at!
