so. Living where I do fishing is a common thing. Right on the ocean and not far from some of the best bass fishing around, fishing would be a common analogy.
Many surf fishers use more than one pole at a time...having two or more lines in and maybe more than one kinds of bait...or maybe one line is deeper than the other...you never know what you might catch at different depths
Fresh water fishing is a great analogy..you go out for bass. You want several kinds of lures. You want some that will work well in cover like submerged bushes and other growth or some that works well in open. You might want something that works well in deep water where the bass are currently at or in shallows...are they gorging on smaller fish? sometimes certain lures work and others do not.
Sometimes life bait works...which ones? Might try more than one, night crawlers, crawdads....
Or maybe you find some trout but no bass....do you have the right lures for them? The right bait?
I remember one time I saw a couple of fish just off shore frolicking. I suppose maybe they were maiting. I was not sure what they were but they were not biting anything. So I finally decided just to keep casting the same little lure I had been using over and over. It looked like a small fish and the tail would "wiggle" as you reeled it in. My intent was to make them so annoyed they would finally bite! lol...it worked!
I think fishing is a great analogy. There are many different kinds of fish...fresh water and salt...and often times they are at different depths and are feeding on different baits...for some you might need a stronger pole and test...the current might be swift so you need a heavier weight...you might need to wait for high tide lol...there are many different kinds of people too and how they think and their availability...we should use every means to pepper them with the truth...why not? The media peppers them with lies and the World Mentality...
We are in a battle for the hearts and minds of Americans vs the World/Satan and the World seems to have a larger market share than we do!

You are mentioning varying techniques, not a massive paradigm shift. Not to mention a paradigm shift that will lead to blatant inconsistencies.
I could be provisionally in favor of a national ad campaign like the Mormons have.
The folks in favor of televangelizing are living in a fantasy world. The overwhelming majority of the viewers of religious programming have already "got" religion! We'll be fishing in a rain barrel of bored, restless fishes with full tummies.
Apparently, one can say this over and over and it never gets through.
All the while the change will grant tacit approval to the viewing of television programming, which is unwholesome by design. The typing of reason, logic, and bible studies on AFF in support of point might as well be typed on toilet paper.
You only have the illusion of control with television. The digs, innuendo, blasphemy, swearing, and other objectionable material isn't nonstop. By the time you've hit the button on the remote, Ethel's done been indecensed!

Dan, I'm not sure, after millions of words on the subject, how my finite brain could influence others in a forceful manner...
...but clearly the preachers who want to influence need to be better prepared, if Brother Maddix is any example. I don't know him, and I'm sure he's as sincere as the next man, but the careful discussion of this issue cannot be based on an emotional response, even from emotional folks. The question is not the good or evil of a technology, it is the determination, or lack thereof, to reach the millions of unchurched SOULS in this country and the world.
If you have to argue emotionally, I can do that... 50% of America's population is located in its 6 largest metropolitan cities... and through our wise church planting, less than 15% of our churches are located in metropolitan areas. Often, these cities have multiple, high-rise apartments, flats and condos...almost all of which are inaccessible to personal witness, door-hangers, etc. The technology exists to reach them...at least to have a chance to reach them... is the Gospel for them???

I continue to be amazed by the exceptional television knowledge possessed by those in opposition to expanded evangelism...
...this voice is soooo familiar... "That won't work...because I say it won't!"

What is going to be so stark, so amazing, so breathtakingly different about UPC televangelism, that people stop mocking the genre, and start tuning in?

Have not had time to read this thread other than the Matt Maddix letter it is based on.
Here are my observations;
1. Based on the couple of times I have seen MM on a webcast the thought of him broadcast to the masses as an example of what Oneness Pentecostalism is makes me glad I am no longer UPC!
2. I think many of those who blindly supported him through his marital difficulties will now turn on him with a vengance. This letter is going to be very unpopular with about 50% of the preachers who read it. This stand may do what a divorce did not - seriously dent the number of people registering for his Soulwinning Bootcamp.

OP Carl, I suppose you're right...I concede...we should continue to rely on that powerfully effective program...Harvestime.
It's like saying, "What's the big deal about a jet engine? We have a very inefficient, but consistently running propellor!"
The impression I get is that you don't want it to work or be effective in reaching the lost...
Our current position is middle ages thinking... let's keep the blood-letting and leeches because we have no idea or evidence that surgery will really work. We say we can "control" books, Internet and radio (just to mention a few), but for some unknown reason we can't "control" television. A bookstore contains every imaginable good and evil written communication...but we don't "not believe" in bookstores...we control our behavior and attitudes...we guard our spirits and desires...the Holy Ghost is not limited to bookstores or radio programs...it works and directs and guides me in every facet of my life...in fact, I pray for it and depend on Him doing just that.

I'm sorry, Dan...it's that funny thing that turns on the front of an airplane... the analogy could be that the Church can use the old wooden thing...or replace it with a 45,000 pounds of thrust...both will move you forward, albeit one at a considerably slow, snail's pace...
