Yes, pray for him.
But, he would not be my main concern.

Yes, Steve, he is a controlling "parent" who damages his children, because his grasp is selfish and abnormal. I have seen this in some of my extended family, and the children of it are damaged for life!!! It is evil and it is wrong, too easy to deflect it as "love", it is immature self love, that grasps and squeezes the life out of those it holds.
The only answer is for a strong person close to this person, to confront, lovingly but very FIRMLY, hold this person accountable. Unfortunately, the strong have departed over the last 50 years, and none remain, or it would not have continued so long.

Yep, growing up in the south, your post is very easy for me to understand. Fortunately, my father and mother, never allowed racism in our home, and they practiced what they preached.
Still, the culture around us was pervasively racists, and hard to avoid as I grew up.

The harvest of this type of "leadership" is the children and grandchildren, struggle to lead "normal" lives, they are damaged for life. Because no matter where they go or what they do, the fear of HELLFIRE, is always there. So, simply admit it, it is wrong and should be given no quarter (place).

It will change, unfortunately it almost always requires a number of funerals. In other words generational change, as the children of this control seldom can control like the parent, and things fall apart with the dying and the wounded scattered here and yon!!
