I grew up in and visited many Romanist 'churches' and found that generally speaking, the thread among them is to look to a man to tell them what is right and wrong instead of actually searching for themselves. Within that system you'll find many men such as yourself ready to operate in and promote the Romanist system of the various flavors of sects.
You may wish to be, or even believe you're Lord over God's heritage but you're not, you know.
1Pe 5:1 Therefore, I exhort the elders among you, as your fellow elder and witness of the sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the glory that is to be revealed, 2 shepherd the flock of God among you, exercising oversight not under compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness; 3 nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your charge, but proving to be examples to the flock.
Ive never been to Elder Epley's church, never met the man face to face, but from what I know of him here, I would say it's safe to say that he doesn't fit this description. He certainly is way more conservative than me, but I am sure his leadership is done with humility and love for the people he pastors.
There are more pastors of traditional churches that have the right attitude and approach to leadership than don't. If you haven't found them, I would say you're just looking in the wrong places. They're out there. And there are plenty of church going saints who think for themselves and study and have a walk with God. But they also practice self willed submission to a church leader, not as a dictator or in an unhealthy way, but recognizing God has called men and women to lead His church and He uses them as ONE WAY OF SEVERAL WAYS to speak to His people and lead them on the journey of faith.
