If you want to get an idea of the level of influence and respect he has in the black community at large, ask around and find out how many black people campaigned and voted for him and how many laughed hysterically and waited to hear what their favorite comedian had to say about it.
If you were to listen to some people, Obama is President now largely because the black community supported him as an unknown because he was black. Surely this same black community could have voted for the "respected" Sharpton enough to make him a viable contender and not a punchline from the beginning to end of his candidacy.

I can tell you he did a great job of making the Republicans look like fools and the Democrats like the calm men in the room. I thought, "Impressive you Racist Pimp. Impressive."

He is a celebrity and he has a name. He is astute enough to get out there and organize something when people are looking to do something anyway. However, I would bet money that a rally right now about this situation hosted, promoted, and pushed by Bishop Jakes would attract more people and be taken more seriously.
