What's the problem.
JD - I used to work for a union.
Not just be in a union, I worked for a union and was paid by them.
I was a union member/steward and active in union politics.
I negotiated contracts with businesses and was a union organizer.
I went to local and national meetings.
I could have had a life-long career there if I had wanted.
I got out.
Why.
Because, it is a business.
No matter what they tell you, it is a business and business decisions are made.
It is also all about using emotions, fear, intimidation, and threats to get your (the unions) job done.
There is a place for unions.
Where ever you have stupid management, you will also have unions.
As a contract negotiator, I would stand up in contract vote meetings and ask for a strike vote against the company.
I was better than any hellfire and brimstone preacher. I would rail and scream against the evil management of the company who was making money off the backs of these poor people.
I always got the vote for a strike.
Do you know what is non-negotiable in a union contract?
There is only one thing.
Check-off.
That means the company will deduct the union dues from the employees check and transfer it to the union account.
You never want to have to hand collect dues.
So JD, don't try to tell me how great and wonderful unions are, because like a reformed smoker, I know the truth and the truth has set me free.
I have many more stories that I could tell, but I need to move on!
Later!

If you want to reform the union laws, then reform the union laws.
Don't use the budget as a round about way of doing it.
This has been my criticism of this Governor-- he has something against the Unions and has from day one, demonstrated by his REFUSAL to negotiate with his Democrat counterparts.
This is a sleezy way of doing what he is attempting to do and his intentions can't be pure, based on his actions.

You forgot to say that screaming how bad unions are doesn't validate the governors actions!

Yeah thanks for that!
Screaming how bad Unions are does NOT validate Governor Walker's actions!

Re: Missing Wisconsin Democrats
What validates his actions is that the state does not have the money.
and
the teachers haven't been paying their "fair share" for healthcare and pensions for several years.
Now is the time to correct that.

That can be corrected without completely scrapping the right for Union members to negotiate their benefits in the future.

JD - he is attempting to reform the union laws just as you want.
Besides remember the quote:
"never let a good crisis go to waste".

Bro,
The way Governor Walker has gone about this reeks of sleeze.
In the end, it will bite him in his rear politically.

For the same reason any employee could use a Union.
I am not sure if, "need" is the right word.

Re: Missing Wisconsin Democrats
JD - there are so many outlets for employees, today that a union is unnecessary.
Let me tell what I just spent a little bit of this week on.
1. 3-4 hours answering a totally bogus charge filed with the EEOC. A charge so ridiculous that any EEOC over the last 20 years would have been embarassed to even send it to me.
2. negotiating with an ex-employees attorney to try to make her lawsuit go away.
I would have been happy to take this baby to court, since it is totally ridiculous and without merit, but due to "monetary considerations" that it would cost us to go to court, we offered her 25k to go away.
Which she happily accepted.
Neither one of these clowns needed a union to move this along.
