Re: Your thoughts on the Shoe Auction @ Conferenc
I did not see it, but my thoughts are that it matters little. I think I can understand it actually. We did this when dad died bidding amongst the family only. Things brought way more than their value because the nostalgia and symbolic significance and we all knew the money was going to mom too (a great/worthy cause).

I heard Cole's nephew, Jack Cunningham, put down several grand for Cole's shoes?
And Pugh's shoes garnered at least. 10k?
Can anyone confirm? Your thoughts?

My only thought is I'm glad I wasn't there.

Because this is like more of a game, where people can see how much you bid and people can also see how much a person's pants or shoes went for.
I never did like this kind of stuff. I can see Jesus going in with a whip and chasing out the moneychangers. What ever happened to not letting your right hand know what your left was doing? When we were pastoring, we never bid at these things, we just gave what we were going to give. Of course, we just looked like we had a bad attitude and were refusing to "cooperate".

I know the guy who bought GA Mangun's shoes for ten thousand for a third party buyer. He was authorized to go up to 100,000 for them. I miss the good old days in the UPC where pastors are worshipped, paid exhorbatant salaries, and are celebrities. I just hope my church remembers that October is pastor's appreciation month.

If I was going to buy an article of clothing, I would have preferred Billy Cole's belt. Now that would have been a conversation piece hanging on the wall. I have little room to talk, however, Billy was quite a great evangelist.

Anyone want to wager the exact length? Just round off to the nearest foot.
(all proceeds from this wager are sent to Mecca)

Well, but is it different really?
I don't know that I have that sort of a relationship with anyone. But, let's say a minister is quite close to a spiritual mentor, loved him dearly and thought highly of him. Is it bizarre to think they may leave a large sum of money in memory of a fine and good man and in exchange receive a token of the honored man?
I don't see that this is much different than giving a large sum to a scholarship, etc. .

Billy Cole was a little "different" but I believe he was a man of God.
One of his weaknesses (or failures or sins if you want to be blunt) was very obvious to everyone.
Most of us hide ours a little better.
