CH, I don't want to get back into the whole election thing, but the whole "voting present" thing that so many people on the right kept repeating and focusing on was ridiculous when you actually looked at it. I think it is just another example of why the GOP is losing touch with my generation...and it's a bit scary.

tstew, it's not just the GOP that is losing people, it is both political parties. Conservatives, on the other hand, seem to be gaining "converts".

I'm concerned about the future. The message and tactics of the GOP are woefully ineffective with my generation. We do not just hear something, run with it, and make it a mantra.

I use the voting present thing as an example. It is something that I heard repeated almost as much as anything else during the campaign. With only minimal effort one can learn that he voted present 129 times out of 4,000 votes (hardly the impression you get when people throw it around like he was not involved). One also learns that politicians vote present for a varity of reasons. One then learns that in the U.S. Senate you cannot vote present. To top it all off when one does learn that it was in fact Senator McCain who missed more votes in the U.S. senate than virtually everyone else the last few years, it leaves one wondering why this is being trotted out as a great political attack.

Why do you say that?

Does it show he has decision making skills in not making a decision?

For me that was a big deal, why bother to show up if you only want to vote present?

As for Oprah being racist, that was the MOST IGNORANT AND OUTLANDISH "racist" accusation I had ever read-- and I read it on AFF!

And there was more than one person who seemed to think that it was true or at least, very likely.

That, was simply mind boggling to me.

But now that Oprah and Palin have done a show together, is that enough?

Probably not.

Many folks see the racism in themselves and apply it to others as they see fit.

Oprah is not a racist.

Those who said so should examine themselves or, at the bare minimum, get to know her a bit more before making such an ignorant statement.

"Ignorant" because the accusation was and is groundless!
She did the show to get the heat off of her for snubbing Palin during the campaign and to boost her ratings. That's all that was about.

Her excuse for supporting a candidate as a citizen and not having any candidate on her show is just lame. She had Obama on her show when she knew he was going to run - before he publicly announced it. You don't think she's not involved in the political machine and didn't know about that? LOL!

Missing a vote to me is not the same as being there able to vote and only voting present.

AFF put this post here, but it is supposed to be in another thread.

For what it is worth, even if Winfrey and Obama are political bedfellows, that does not make either one of them racist.

You and I most normal thinking Americans realize this.

But my quote is not from this thread.

Esther, I addressed this in a follow-up post that you probably didn't see before you sent this one. However, your post highlights what I am saying. One would get the impression from what you just said, that Obama voted "present" more than he voted yes or no. That is the way this was presented for months. When you bother to look into it and see that he voted present 129 times out of more than 4,000 votes, it makes the much ado look pretty silly to a lot of people.
