Yes, that is it exactly. Close enough! I like the SNL version better!

The "oath" is to uphold and defend the Constitution; not to be squeaky clean in all manners of truthfulness.

By lying to the court (under oath or in any fashion) he was deliberately obstructing the court's attempt to discover "the truth, the whole truth" of the matter under investigation, however.

Ferdando is right. Had he been any other type of celebrity other than the President of the United States he would have been booked, finger printed, and done some jail time with his mug shot posted on The Smoking Gun dot com.

Had he been a Republican facing a Democrat House and Senate he would have been removed from office.

THAT'S the point. I'm just using the SNL quote to make it sound as stupid as it actually was!!

Lott was dumb enough to muddle his words and his mix his passions and desires with a "yesterday" that Thurmond himself expressed remorse for; I don't think he was so stupid as to be calling for segregation in the 1990s as the Dems tried to portray him.

But Thurmond only had ONE agenda in his presidential campaign. What else could Lott have meant? My goodness, I have one/millionth the political and historical knowledge that Lott has and for crying out loud, I knew about Thurmond's campaign. Surely Lott knew what Thurmond's campaing was about. If Lott meant something else, I have no idea what it could have been.

I don't know. He is dissed by many on the Right and probably was responsible for a lot of likely Republican voters staying home in 2008.

Well, probably so, but as John Bolton stated - He didn't know why Obama was making her lack of foreign experience an issue. All that would do is show how inexperienced he was as well.

I used the word "dumb" to characterize Lott's statement. What Lott was "thinking" and "what he meant" were probably innocuous and vacuous warm fuzzys fueled by the alcohol he had just consumed.
