If you are asking, is it wrong to not report an offering you may have received.....
Was it a gift given to you? or was it considered payment for a service rendered? Do you make your living from preaching? Or, do you consider preaching a part time job? That could make a difference.

I live on a pension and Social Security and pay federal and state taxes on both. The city in which I live does not consider that income taxable so I do not pay city tax on my pension or social security.

Occasionally I receive a check when I preach or do a funeral some where. I either endorse the check on the back and drop it in the offering or return it to the organization or just endorse it and put it into an offering some where. I do not claim the income nor do I claim the donation when I file my taxes. I'm not sure if that is legal or not but I am not speaking of a large amount or something that happens very often.

Sam, if you were to ask the IRS, I am sure they would have a line for ALL income and even trading of goods products or services of any value.

I think I'll follow my own guidelines of "Don't ask and don't tell" then.

The way it used be (1990s) was that any gifts or honorariums totally under $10,000 was not taxed. Anything you got over $10,000 was taxable income. Then they were talking about raising it to $25,000 per year; then I stopped paying attention.

If it is a church registered as a 501(c) nonprofit and the pastor or anyone else removes cash from the offering basket without accounting for it then there could be trouble.

All gifts that the church receives which are then given to the pastor (or if he simply takes it) are to be reported as income by the pastor and as salary by the church. The pastor (and anyone else) can still receive gifts up to the amount of $10k (or maybe $25k by now) in any given year that are not taxable as income.

Probably ought to let this one go now too, Jaze. There's going to be a lot of back patting and shoulder massages "over there" until they get all of the ruffled feathers back in place.
