Hints? What is this "hint" business? Sort of gives one a feeling of superiority, eh?
The issue of the gates of hell is speaking about how death cannot hold back the church since it is founded upon Christ, the Son of the LIVING God. It is the additonal revelation that Peter missed after getting the initial one of Christ's identity. It has to do with the church's identity, in being enjoined to the qualities of Christ, the Son of the LIVING (undying) God. We're changed into the same image as Christ on the mountain or Kingdom rock of revelation, much like Christ's face shone like the sun a week later when the same two revelations were again presented to Peter, who again missed the second.
In short, the church will not succumb to death or any other lesser enemy. That means it still stands.
