I guess I am more of the mindset that everyone is worth saving. Wonder if it was your son in this situation?
I don't see it as a matter of being worth saving.

Every soul is precious.

Why would Paul give the advice he gave?

Debate doesn't convince a person who is spiritually deceived.

I didn't say we shouldn't pray for them; it just seems counter-productive to continue engaging on an intellectual level what is a spiritual issue.

I have committed to pray regularly for Daniel because I revere his father's memory, and because I like him, and because I feel prompted in the Spirit to pray for him.

But I am pretty much through arguing doctrine with him.

If it were my son (God forbid) I believe I would take the same tactic.

I did in fact with some immediate family members who followed their pastor into charismatic error. I debated until I figured out they weren't intellectually convinced as much as they were spiritually deceived.

So I shut down the arguing and started praying.

Before long, the snake that had led them astray was revealed to have been in a multi-year adulterous affair, including the time frame when he got all his great revelations of glorious liberty and doctrinal ambiguity.

They are recovering now from the wreckage of all that junk.

I hope and pray Daniel does also.

Tts 3:9 ¶ But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.
I think if we took this scripture seriously these forums might not exist.

I'm not sure that would be such a bad thing, either.

Certainly some of the activity would slow way down.

And honestly, I am re-thinking some of my personal interactions in light of some of these passages.

Some things are fine to debate and hash out, but there are times I am beginning to think some of my debates aren't that good for me or anyone else.

I've had this very same thing on my mind.

I do agree with you CS. I get razzed about not engaging in theological discussions a lot on AFF, but that is not why I am here. I know what I believe, and I fully intend to close my ears to some things.

Call me close minded, old-fashioned or whatever, but I believe in the One True God, the Acts 2:38 response to the gospel and a life that is pleasing to God.

I'll debate non-essentials all day long. But doctrine is biblical and unquestionable to me.

I posted the original thread question out of sincerity. I had never really thought about it before.

If it's sincere honest discussion carried out in the proper way there is some benefit I believe. I know that my own understanding has been enlightened and enlarged at times and even in the past few months I've had several "lightbulb" moments that have been helpful in aiding my understanding of some things.

So in that context discussion has merit. And if it draws us and carries us forward into the presence of God or into greater desire for spiritual things then there is merit as well. That has happened and does happen on occasion. So that's good.

A lot of this striving and contention and foolishness is about showing off, looking for attention, one-upmanship & pretension which all stems from pride of course ... which God hates of course. That's something to think about too.

There's lots more I could say here but I might get fingers pointed in my direction seein's how I have a couple thousand plus posts here to my credit or discredit - depending on how you look at it.

I've come very close to making an "it's time for me to go" post more than once lately and in fact had withdrawn for a few days but RonB pulled me back in with his thread about the Conference with Bros. Foster and Dillon a couple weeks back. I didn't want him left hangin' in that thread with no response so I chimed in. Blame it on Ron. Hehe.

Maybe I'll chime back out. The thing is if I make a post like that then I have to keep my word. Don't know if I want to paint myself into that corner.

There is no record that she spoke with tongues.

Often in the Old Testament people prophesied when they were filled with the Holy Spirit. That may be what happened in Acts 19:5 when the Holy Spirit came upon the 12 in Ephesus when Paul laid his hands on them. The record says, "...they spoke with tongues and prophesied." It is not clear if all 12 spoke with tongues and also prophesied or if some spoke with tongues and some prophesied. It may just mean that the vocal gifts of prophesy and tongues were in operation after the Holy Spirit came upon them.

Some of the "old timers" preached that Jesus spoke with tongues. They base this on a couple places where Mark records a statement of Jesus in Aramaic and then he (Mark) gives the interpretation.

Some think it is possible that Hezekiah spoke in tongues when he wept and prayed based on some of the wording of Isaiah 38:14. That happened around 701 BC.
