My Canadian Friends,

Feel free to skip over the next two or three posts. I am posting them to push us into the "Top Five."


God manifest in flesh is the mystery of godliness and the wonder of the ages. In Christ, God was as human as God could be, and man was as divine as man can be. The wonder of the incarnation is found in God becoming the Son of man so that we could become the sons of God.

Our limitless God committed Himself to the limitations of humanity to release humanity from the limitations of our sinful condition. The One who spoke the worlds into being had to learn to make sounds, form words, and speak in sentences. Robed with glory and shod with splendour, He strode across galaxies, stepping from star to star, but as a helpless baby Mary wrapped Him in swaddling clothes; in the flesh of a toddler the Everlasting Father learned how to walk from chair to chair, stumbling and standing. His hands hollowed out the seas and stacked mud into mountains, but as a child He had to fumble with a fork to feed Himself, ask for help to reach high things, and be carried in the arms of His earthly father. He fashioned the intricacies of the ecosystem, aligned the planets with the sun, and set all of creation in brilliant order, but had to learn letters and grammar. He was the Living Word, the Author of all things, but had to be taught to read the Scriptures. From His celestial throne He surveyed the infinite host of the heavens and called them by name, but as a child He had to learn how to count and do simple math.

From forever He existed in flawless perfection, but in incarnation He learned the frustration of imperfection. Hands that had shaped the universe had to learn skills through practice and failed attempts. In Deity, He was omnipotent, but in flesh He experienced weariness and pain, finished second, struck out, fell down, skinned his shins, mashed His thumb with a hammer, and felt the red blush of embarrassment flood His face. His creation was perfect, but as a carpenter he had to cope with the exasperation of cutting the last board too short, or marring a fine piece of trim work with a misplaced hammer.

Angels celebrated His presence in Heaven, but on Earth He had to learn to deal with unreasonable clients, unscrupulous competitors, and people that would complain when God Himself had built their new cupboards. Ears that had heard the sweet harmonies of Heaven's choirs were subjected to the off colour talk of working men and the furtive whispers of the hormone driven imagination of teenage cousins. Heaven knew many titles for the Lord, but earth added some that would make angels blush: illegitimate child, pretender, drunkard, blasphemer. He was lied about, excluded from the group, gossiped about, and hated without cause; the author of the Law was judged a sinner by men of corrupt morals and evil hearts.

Congratulating this is kind of like celebrating the accomplishment of a toddler who made their first poo in the potty; you want to be encouraging, but you feel embarassed applauding poo.
