Re: A Pounding - What items do you like to include

I think "poundings" are most likely a southern tradition?
Although, I've not heard of any of them in a long time.

A Bloody Nose, Black Eye, Multiple Bruises, those are the only things I can think of to include, but I have one question PO, why in the World are you asking about what to give someone a pounding for on this forum??

Who made you mad this time?

I've never heard of it anywhere else but in the south, Texas to be exact. Those crazy Texans, always looking for a fight...

I think a gift certificate at the local grocery would be great in order to enable the couple or person a choice as to their preference.

In other words, giving a pounding may not include items that need refrigeration and those are the most expensive things to purchase.

I thought of spices, but then I don't know what taste the person would have.

Paper towels, tissue paper.....

Any other ideas?
I have only read your initial post here but without going any further am willing to bet that probably 90% of the people reading it have no idea what you are thinking about. To most a "pounding" is probably a good beating. You are showing your age!! LOL

This thread is from 2007. LOL! Who dragged it up? And don't forget, CC1, you and I are the same age. So are you old or what?

The only reason I knew what a pounding is is because we are the same age! LOL!! I did not not notice this was from 2007. I am always amazed when someone pulls up ancient threads.

Pressing On, raised in southeast Missouri, I remember "poundings." It's a sweet tradition that I would like to see restored.

Re: A Pounding - What items do you like to include

By the way, the reason it's call a "pounding" is that the expectation was that friends and family members would give a newly married couple a pound of this or a pound of that.

Just like a shower, someone would coordinate the event, and everyone would compare notes, so that the couple wasn't given too much of one staple, and not enough of another. People typically brought flour, sugar, brown sugar, rice, beans, etc.

Poundings were usually given after a couple returned from their honeymoon and were settled in for a month or two.

I would imagine the reason why the tradition died is that many families no longer cook things that aren't pre-packaged.
