The newspaper posted an editorial on its Web site Thursday evening saying the cartoon was meant to mock the federal economic stimulus bill, but "to those who were offended by the image, we apologize."

This is the LEAST they should do.

The piece was posted hours after 200 picketers chanting "Boycott the Post! Shut it down!" marched in front of the paper's office, saying the cartoon echoed racist stereotypes of blacks as monkeys.

The editorial said that "most certainly was not its intent," adding that some media and public figures who have long-standing differences with the paper saw the cartoon "as an opportunity for payback."

Yeah, that statement nullifies their apology! How could they have not known this would have been so offensive?

Calling them "opportunists," the editorial said: "To them, no apology is due."

Who's the opportunist here? I say, the author of the cartoon is-- he has a record of being an "opportunist" so to speak.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, who helped lead the outcry over the cartoon, criticized what he called the paper's "conditional statement" of regret.
"Though we think it is the right thing for them to apologize to those they offended, they seem to want to blame the offense on those (who) raised the issue, rather than take responsibility for what they did," he said in a statement.

my words:
Sharpton is a lightning rod for criticism, but this time I agree with him.

I knew these folks would only add insult to injury.

But the NY Post is trying to create a name for themselves-- draw attention to themselves. This "Conservative" paper did so at the expense of Black folks.

The author and the publishers realized the implications of the cartoon.

They published it anyway.

They will not "punish" their own or themselves.

So it wasn't suicide to print that garbage.

Jermyn get a life. Slavery ended a long time ago for the black people but many including you are still slaves to the past. You have your black president such as he is, now enjoy life.

The caricature had nothing to do with slavery, but it had everything to do with hate and the and fear mongering of our country's past.

Just because I call someone or some organization on something that I find blatantly racist doesn't mean I don't have a life.

You get a life!

You get a grip what this is all about and when you can find it within yourself to see and admit the wrongness of what happened here, then maybe you'll be able to see that the justified anger I have has nothing to do with slavery!
