My Son-in-law was telling us how close a family he comes from. After he married our daughter, we found out why they were so "close"!
It turns out that the family get-togethers at least every two weeks are spear-headed by his mother! His mother called and administered extreme guilt if he didn't attend everyone's bithday parties.
To make peace, my daughter and husband agreed to attend only one family party per month. His mother cried when she got that news! That's why I mentioned that many so-called 'close' families are often guilt driven.

My MIL does not control me like that anymore...the controlling guilt...my husband finally put a stop to that years ago!

To me that shows a controlling but also insecure mother. My daughter and son-in-law have just recently moved next door to me, but it is a temporary situation for financial reasons.
They have been there a month and I think I have been in their house twice. They are in and out of mine constantly but I try to give them their privacy. We barbecued for Memorial Day and they were home but didn't come over until later because of other things they were doing. I did NOT get all bent out of shape over it because they have their individual lives just like my husband and I do.

I loved living nest door to mama and papa. We lived there 11 years and then moved 500 miles away to start a church. After 7 years we took a church 15 miles away and I took care of them (day and night) for two years. After we had been back a year papa passed away and nine months later mama passed. Those two years were very trying, giving 24 hour care and pastoring was ruff. But I don't regret it.
Oh how I wish I could move back next door to them. It's been five years, oh how I miss them.

I can't edit anymore, but please understand I did not post my feelings on any topics, and I certainly do not equate the two. In the Old Order Mennonite church however, they are both anathema, and seen as a major departure of truth.
