How to Stop Smoking

Tobacco seems to be one of the more difficult habits to kick. Many good people trying to please God have prayed and prayed trying to quit, but not having the success they want.

Stop trying to quit!!!! Stop trying to do it yourself!! Surrender!! Capitulate!!! Say, "Jesus, I give this care to you, You do it for me". Don't allow yourself to feel guilty anymore, even when you smoke. (Jesus said, "Thy sins be forgiven thee") That gets rid of the condemnation. Go ahead, let Jesus do it for you.

I have seen this work, time and again. I know it will work if you will work it. I've seen it work overnight, more than once. I believe the problem, in many cases, is that you try too hard in your own ability. By trying so hard, you end up with an emotional focus on the problem. It is a Bible principle that whatever you focus a large part of your attention on, is what you will have.

A few examples:

Eve looked at the forbidden fruit;

Abraham and Sarah looked at the promises of God instead of their problem;

Jacob placed branches with white streaks cut in the bark, in the watering
troughs of the cattle to manipulate what colors the offspring would be;

Israel looked at the dead snake on the pole, instead of the live snakes;

"As a man thinketh in his heart so is he";

The way to break that emotional focus is to look at Jesus, visualize him taking your addiction, keep doing that in your mind, then capitulate, surrender, give up the fight. Let Jesus fight for you.

"Looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of faith". (Heb 12:2)

"But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image..." (II Cor 3:18)

Good post!

My first point:

I heard a testimony of a man who did just what you said. Instead of living under condemnation of smoking, every time he would light up he would speak a confession of faith thanking God for delivering him, and professing that he was free of the addiction.

Without trying he noticed that he was smoking less and less until he was totally free.

My second point:

Another thing that is very powerful is:

Gal 5:16
16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. (KJV)

Many try to not fulfill the lust of the flesh so that they can walk in the Spirit. However, according to this scripture, that is backwards.

Start walking in the Spirit (habits and all) and you will see them fall off.

Third point:

Heard another story of man trying to quit. Had everyone pray for him, tried and tried, but always found himself smoking.

His church was having a guest speaker come through and he invited an unsaved friend. The friend went to the altar and got saved AND was immediately delivered of smoking.

This actually ticked the guy off and he started complaining to the Lord as to why God would deliver this man, but not him. The Lord spoke to him some very powerful words:

"Because you still like it"

The man got a revelation, he wanted free because he knew he was supposed to be free, but he really liked what he was doing which was blocking his deliverance.

He repented and was received his deliverance.

New thread:

Now what about pornography? I heard a statistic the other day that 65% of evangelical men are into online pornography

This is exactly how it happened for me!

I tried and tried to quit smoking. I prayed that God would help me. Then I realized, I didn't really WANT to quit. I loved the taste of my cigarettes! That was when I changed my prayer to be, "Lord, help me to NOT want to smoke." Then I immediately received my deliverance. HE REMOVED ALL DESIRE TO SMOKE! I have been TOTALLY smoke-free for the last 11 years (and I had smoked for 27 years)! Absolutely no urge to smoke. It was all HIM. No effort at all on my part!

NOW THAT IS SOMETHING TO PRAISE GOD ABOUT!

Re: How to Stop Smoking

I guess that some won't believe this, but when my wife recieved the Holy Ghost, she was delivered from smoking completely-never had one since that day, nearly 8 years ago. I don't disagree with any of these posts, but I do wonder where all that old time Holy Ghost power has gone.

Re: How to Stop Smoking

My brother was a heavy smoker for thirty plus years, when he got fill he hasn't wanted one since.

Myself, God helped me never to start. That's grace. Thank God.
