Not enough faith? Too much sin?

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,341574,00.html

What really strikes home is that I personally know these people (although we have been out of touch for several years). We all went to the same church in the Wausau area.

I was trying to figure out what belief or religion they practice now....

just says they were part of a home church

Re: Not enough faith? Too much sin?

They left the UPC a number of years ago (for a variety of reasons I won't get into), but seem to have developed a few "strange" doctrines. Apparerently the "no doctor" thing was part one of them.
(One of my wifes cousins is currently on this same path -a whole nudder story!)
Dale went to bible college in Stockton with my Uncle during the early 90's.

I know people like this as well. They can't put their kids in a real school because they don't believe in getting immunizations. No school will accept a child without them. I think their stupidity is putting their childrens health at risk as well. But.... hey, who am I to judge.

Re: Not enough faith? Too much sin?

Having known these two, they are wonderful and nice people. But I can also guarantee that they are feeling guilty for not having taken their daughter to the doctor (which WOULD have saved her life) and even MORE guilt for feeling their first guilt. Meaning, their faith has been "tested" and found wanting. A bit more faith is all that was needed! They must be "weak" for actually wondering if the doctor might have been the wise choice. That sort of thing.

My dad goes to their coffee shop regularly and will probably be talking to them soon (if he hasn't already).

I won't rip into the parents for their actions. I'm sure they were sincere and really thought they were doing the right thing. If this tells us anything, it tells us the critical need for BALANCED teaching. Its sad this young girl had to pay the price for the parents errors. I feel for the parents as well. The guilt and sense of failure and loss they must feel has got to be overwhelming. They sure stand in the need of prayer, compassion and sensible teaching.

Re: Not enough faith? Too much sin?

I don't rip them in the sense that they had any malicious intent whatsoever. I don't think either of these people have a bad bone in their bodies.
Having said that..... Many people who are (rightfully) charged with vehicular manslaughter probably had no malicious intent either AND are really nice people.

I made the misstake of showing this story to my wife (who knows a bit more about medical "stuff" than I do) and she went (predictably) ballistic. A simply blood test followed by a shot of insulin, and she would be alive today.
We will never know HER wishes in this. An episode of Law&Order which aired about 10 years ago dealt with this topic. They ended up prosecuting the parents for murder AFTER discovering that the child actually called for help at one point (which was heard on the 911 call, which itself was used as evidence -after all, why call 911 if you think all that is needed is faith?)

Re: Not enough faith? Too much sin?

I'm not trying to rip them either, but I don't think it was using commonsense. I know that GOD is the healer, and I have had to depend on him hundreds of times. However, I also feel he gives others the abilities to help us. For example, giving Dr. the knowledge to help us when we are sick, and so on. Just my opinion

Re: Not enough faith? Too much sin?

How does faith heal anything? Also could someone please point me to a faith measuring stick.

Balanced teaching is the missing component here.
