I like a healthy mix of old and new... but I really am drawn mostly to the choruses and hymns.

This was recorded like this to give a friend of mine in Brazil an idea of what I was aiming for:

This was great... I love the tune, and the lyrics too!

Thank you so much. I am waiting on a new computer, so I can resume home recording. I’d prefer to do this project without a studio bill, where I can negotiate that.

As the sings come together, I’ll perhaps chart the progress here.

Re: Musicianship query

That song above will of course have more to it--and there's a bridge section that's being worked on still. There's a percussive element, slide guitar and most likely a blues harmonica that will manage to make it in to the recording(if what I hear in my head is in any way accurate or sane)

Continuing lyrics thus far:

I hear the voices right beside me
on the road to who-knows where
Talking bout the evil hand that took my sight
"It's the sin of generations--or a curse upon his head--
and that's what keeps him begging in the night."

(But) all I needed was a voice of compassion
and a loving hand that drove away the flies
(and) a Savior coming 'round--taking the dust of the ground
Saying "Mr. Blindman, here's some mud in your eyes."

Re: Musicianship query

I've been trying to learn how to play guitar for over 30 years! I beat on the guitar and bellar during song service. I was lead screamer for a couple garage bands in the early 90's but my voice has been dropped down to baritone on a good day, bass on others. I open my mouth and Claude Ely comes out when I'm singing!
My wife is self taught on the piano. She can read a little music but mostly she plays by ear.
She has written quite a few songs over the years, mostly in the southern gospel style.

I read--but very weakly--which is the bane of most guitarists.

I read charts for studio work, but really, my studio work also simply includes familiarity with the song after a few takes, and then I just run with it.

I have fortunate enough to despise Chick Corea jazz forms, so I don't need to know it all.

Voices take a beating. Mine as well. I'm thinking of taking Ken Tamplin's voice course to preserve what I have (which is fair). A bunch of my friends are students of his. They just don't announce it
