I do not know much about this case, but found this in the article interesting:

The investigation into Smith's shooting lay dormant for years after it was reviewed by state and federal prosecutors without criminal charges until then-Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce charged Stockley, citing new, unspecified evidence. Prosecutors still have never said what the new evidence was; the defense claimed in closing arguments Aug. 9 that there's been no new evidence in the case since 2012.
In a text message to the Post-Dispatch Friday, Joyce said only: "I'm confident that the citizens understand why this case was prosecuted."

So, Jennifer Joyce LIED about the new evidence that was found.
Seem to me she should be asked about this by the state bar.
If she lied she should be reprimanded.

I guess the case was prosecuted purely for political reasons, then?

Which indicates the rule of law has broken down. How can ANYONE, ANYWHERE, in America, expect anything BUT politics, corruption, bribes, and injustice in the legal system when stuff like this goes on?

A lot of people are going to wake up one day and think "There is no rule of law, it's everybody for themselves now." At that point we will have officially completed our fundamental transformation into a failed banana republic.

No society can afford the delegitimization of it's judicial and governmental structure. That way lies only madness, revolution, civil war, anarchy, death and destruction.

But hey, still got football! So, meh.
