Our President's Feckless Foreign Policy

We were told the U.S. strategy in the Middle East by BO a few years ago was "leading from behind". Instead we are behind in leading. On Monday our president told the UN that he was concerned that the world was becoming more dangerous and that there was a risk for a more disordered world. Yet he does nothing about it.

Not long ago our president was declaring victory in the Middle East---the tide of war was receding, Al Qaeda was on a path to defeat, ISIS was a JV team, Iraq was an Obama administration success story, Bashar Assad’s days were numbered in Syria, the Arab Spring was the beginning of better things, the reset with Russia was a success.

One hundred percent wrong.

His focus on fundamentally transforming America---a takeover of the healthcare system, raising taxes, legalizing same sex marriages, running up record deficits and quadrupling our national debt, and much more has made his strategy in foreign policy basically "retreat and accommodate". We will let the world sort out its problems instead help the world do so.

Seizing the moral high ground is victory in our president's world. Being on the right side of history---ideological academic speak. As long as he can say his legacy is "I got us out of Iraq---I got us out of Afghanistan" he is fine. Doesn't matter as we pull out of the Middle East, Russia and Putin step into the vacuum.

Think about it: the Russians haven't been a presence in the Middle East since the 70s when Anwar Sadat kicked them out of Egypt! Now they are claiming that WE ARE VIOLATING INTERNATIONAL LAW with our air strikes in Syria---because unlike Russia, we don't have the permission of the legitimate government of Syria to do so. So leading from behind comes to fruition---if we won't lead, if we won't take action, if we declare false "red lines" and do nothing about red lines being crossed---Putin and Russia are happy to step in.

Our president doesn't care. He was obviously an ideologue in 2008 and many of us warned you all what a BO presidency would become with it's far reaching implications. As long as folks will sit around and talk about how America was fundamentally changed under his watch, there's no need to be alarmed about hundreds of thousands of refugees pouring out of the Middle East into Europe, no big deal that the Taliban have captured an Afghani city for the first time since they were kicked out by our military many years ago, nothing to worry about, we have guaranteed that Iran won't get nuclear weapons because they TOLD US they wouldn't do that and we shook hands with them, no concern that our allies are questioning our leadership in the world and wondering who can they count on. Shrug your shoulders Mr President, let's talk about global warming the REAL danger in the world. Let's focus on fundamentally changing America socially, economically, and in every other way while the world is changing all around us---for the worse.

As long as our president can seem charming in front of the cameras, preach from the bully pulpit, lecture like the professor he is, there's no need to actually DO SOMETHING, exercise our power, stand up against danger and evil. His foreign policy is basically an attempt to evade action. His foreign policy is more or less an exercise of ideological anti Americanism.

And the consequences are felt from the Ukraine to Damascus. No worries though. It will all just work out because, you know, our president has a good heart.

Great points you make DB, with both superpowers in the region things can escalate quickly. All that has to happen is for an aircraft to get shot down.

Re: Our President's Feckless Foreign Policy

Well Russia is now bombing American-backed Syrian rebels-- rebels who were against Asaad and against ISIS.

I say it once and I say it again, BHO really messed up when he didn't make the hard decision and go into Syria back in 2012 and 2013.

What a foreign policy nightmare we have in Syria right now!

We are really in a bad position.

If we respond to Russia's aggression, then this whole fiasco goes in a completely different direction that it never had to go.

If we don't respond, innocent people that thought they had the support of America will die. While this is bad, this is honestly just one of the very many bad effects of a very bad decision.

While hardly anyone would have supported American troops going into Syria, definitely not his party base at all, that is EXACTLY what we should have done!

Russia has begun a proxy war with America in Syria.

Is Syria the next Afghanistan?

I am logging off. Every time I think about Obama's very bad decisions concerning Syria, I get frustrated, angry, stomach achy and this whole thing is so far outside of my circle of influence.

I believe that expending resources to negotiate a release of Bowe Bergdahl (military stating they knew he was a deserter at the outset), transferring that release with Taliban prisoners, and having his parents at the White House for a press conference tells you everything you want to know about our President.

He shakes hands with the leaders of Iran, Cuba, and Russia---and what do we get out of it? President Obama sure is a friendly guy.

Nevel Chamberlain was a nice guy. Jimmy Carter was a nice guy.

It doesn't make the bad guys respect you or fear you.
