Republicans vs Democrats on Social Security

In another thread, Seascapes suggested that Republicans wanted “to do away with social security”. She then used a word that no right thinking democrat should ever say except when talking really really bad about republicans… She used the P word! Really PRIVITIZE.

In the first place Seascapes was wrong. Republicans don’t want to “do away” with SS. In the second place she was right. At least in part… but it isn’t nearly as nefarious as she makes it out… So let’s look at Social Security, what it is, where it is going, and who the bad guys are!

First of all, Social Security is a retirement safety net that was supposed to keep old folks from starving to death. Workers pay into a system and at the age of 65ish they receive a benefit from the government.

However, all SS insures is that those who are left to rely on it, is poverty in retirement.

Social Security as it is currently constructed, takes money from an individual in the form of taxes and that money goes into the general fund and is spent by the government on whatever it wants. The original plan (that was just never followed) was for the money that was being collected to be used for days when more was going out. That never happened as politicians quickly found they could use that money up front and just issue Treasury IOU’s in their place.

Out here in the real world where non-democrats and mathematicians who hate politics live, this is called a Ponzy scheme… even Rich people go to jail for creating Ponzy Schemes. Somehow all 535 members of congress have avoided the jail time. The mathematicians who hate politics are pretty mad about that fact.

I digress….

Take a look at this link. It is the U. S. Debt clock. In the bottom left hand corner you will find the current Unfunded Social Security Liability. The source is the Federal Reserve.
You should all look at this page every day. It will make you sick but ‘sick’ in this case is good medicine.

http://www.usdebtclock.org/#

Social Security has an unfunded liability in excess of 14 Trillion Dollars (that is TRILLION with a T). Take a look at the top left hand corner. That number is the current U. S. National Debt. The current National Debt is 700 BILLION dollars smaller than the unfunded liability we have created for Social Security… don’t even look at the Medicare number… it will make you wet your britches.

So the democrats say Social Security is just fine. What we really need to do is take some more money away from rich people and that will solve everything.

But let’s look at what Social Security is for an average feller out there in average America land.

Re: Republicans vs Democrats on Social Security

Let’s use a guy who averages making 40k a year over his lifetime. From age 20 to 65 he has socked back roughly 15% of his income into Social Security or 6k per year. (For ease of understanding I am going to use non-inflation adjusted numbers but you will get the idea here…).

I used this calculator and made adjustments to reflect a number of 40K per month of earnings for an entire lifetime which cannot be done and overstates the return. But for this argument it works.
http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/quickcalc/index.html

He will have put back $270,000 of his own money into the system. Under the SS system, he will expect to receive $1948.00 per month until he dies. Let’s say he lives to the ripe old age of the American national average of 81 he will have received a total of $374,016.00. A democrat would look at this and just be giddy! They would say look how awesome America is! This great American is going to get 374K dollars in return for his 270K dollars! He is going to make nearly $2K per month! Life is grand!

Over 40 years of saving, he managed a capital gain of $100K That is pretty pathetic by any measure.

Let’s look at what would have happened if this guy had been allowed to invest this savings in safe investments with a return of 4% per year over that time:

First he would have $726,176.35 in his account the day he retired. Second, if he pulled the 4% out per year his income would be $29000 dollars. And his total of $726K would still be in his account.
Instead of a capital return of 100K (which he would have to live 16 years to get) He would have made $500K in capital return.

Secondly in the current Social Security scenario, if the guy dies the day after he retires, his estate has zero dollars in it. The government gets his $270,000 dollars. How many of you want to rely on a system that has a huge capital investment in your death? Because that is exactly what the Social Security system that democrats love is. Republicans and mathematicians who hate politics hate it.

So let’s review, the current democrat loved system, only provides a return if you live long enough to get it. It returns very little in actual return, and there is no estate left for survivors once an individual dies.

Republicans and mathematicians who hate politics would rather a system that provides safe options for investment, where the return is still vastly better than the SS option. AND that allows for an individual to pass along their estate to their heirs.

Re: Republicans vs Democrats on Social Security

Now here is the kicker. While democrats like Seascapes make bombastic statements like “Republicans want to do away with Social Security” the actual fact is, liberals in general and democrats in particular have for the last 2 years been working on plans to ACTUALLY DO AWAY WITH YOUR 401K PLAN!

Yep that is right. Liberals have given testimony before congress of this great plan to simply eliminate the 401k plan and make you put money into a new government account where your only investment option is in UNITED STATES DEBT.

And the liberals call Republicans crazy!

Just starting to live with this. Trying to figure out what "luxuries" to give up first.

Re: Republicans vs Democrats on Social Security

Social Security as democrats want it is simply an insurance plan to insure those who need it live in poverty.

Republicans are evil, greedy and corrupt and just want to re-open the poorhouse.

Democrats believe that everyone should have a house, a car, at least $500 worth of groceries every week, and they love animals.

You forgot to incorporate Dick Cheney and Halliburton into that mini diatribe.
