History buffs...

...thats Pentecostal History.

I read somewhere that one of the participants of the Azusa Street Revival died on the Titanic while returning from Europe to carry the Pentecostal Message. Does anyone know his name? Can't remember... Oh, Dan, where are you...???

I believe I have "stumped" the noted Pentecostal historians among us!

You may be thinking of the William Stead. He was a Welshman who reported extensively on the Welsh Revival and did so with some sympathy for the oft maligned "religious fanatics." He is cited by a lot of Pentecostal historians.

He drowned when the Titanic went down. I'm not certain if he was on his way to America to investigate the revival here, or what the purpose of his ill fated trip was. He was a respected journalist and not an evangelist.

From Wikipedia:

"Stead boarded the RMS Titanic for a visit to America to take part in a peace congress at Carnegie Hall at the request of William Howard Taft. After the ship struck the iceberg, Stead helped several women and children into the lifeboats. After all the boats had gone, Stead went into the 1st Class Smoking Room, where he was last seen sitting in a leather chair and reading a book.
A later sighting of Stead, by survivor Philip Mock, has him clinging to a raft with John Jacob Astor IV."Their feet became frozen," reported Mock, "and they were compelled to release their hold. Both were drowned." This story was proven false because Astor was crushed to death when the 1st funnel fell. [1]
Stead had made two possible premonitions concerning the Titanic. On March 22nd,1886, he published an article named "How the Mail Steamer Went Down in Mid-Atlantic, by a Survivor" [2], where a steamer collides with another ship, with high loss of life due to lack of lifeboats. Stead had added "This is exactly what might take place and will take place if liners are sent to sea short of boats". In 1892, Stead published a story called From the Old World to the New [3], in which a White Star Line vessel, the Majestic, rescues survivors of another ship that collided with an iceberg."

There is a report by Stead of a meeting during the 1904 Welsh Revival here.

I'm stumped as well. But you may be correct. That name seems familiar. But it seems I read whoever I am thinking of was one of the major participants in the Azusa street meetings. I've looked at the names of the participants that I could find and cross checked them with a list of Titanic passengers. No matches. Might just be one of those urban legends.

All I can find is Stead also.

William Stead (1849-1912).

He was an editor of a periodical.

The report in this issue was by William Stead (1849-1912). As editor of London's Pall Mall Gazette, he became famous for efforts at social reform, including opposition to childhood prostitution. Stead was a passenger on the Titanic and died at sea when the ship sank in 1912.

I have read some of the history available on the Pentecostal movement but don't remember reading about that.

Could it be you are referring to John Harper? Here are two links giving an account of his final moments in the frigid waters at the sinking of the Titanic.

Link #1 and Link #2 give more detail on Harper
