Ministering to Native Americans

Is there anyone here that specifically has experience in the area of ministering to native americans?

Any native americans here that were raised in the traditions of the native americans?

I'm looking for thoughts, ideas, comments, suggestions, advise, etc. in regards to ministering effectively to these people.

As a former Roman Catholic, it irritates me to death that the RCC reaches out to these people where they live while apostolic churches nearby do not. When I see them in town, my heart goes out to them. When I drive through the reservation, my heart goes out to them. When a few occasionally visit my church only to disappear again, I know they need a church of their own.

One of my desires when moving back to Wisconsin was to start a daughter work on the reservation. I spoke to my pastor about it and hes all for it. I feel that its preparation time. First of all, I've begun some research to study their culture, belief system, etc. Next I'll be looking for a good bible study to use. I also have a very dedicated young man that is part native american (same type as the local tribe) that is very interested in working with me in this area. He'll be a big plus thats for sure!

I'd appreciate some input from anyone that relates to this type of ministry.

I have very little input other than to encourage you!
Remember that their heritage doesn't need to be torn down in the process of "converting" them.
I've been through and to Shawano many times. Although it's been nearly 20 years I was at church camp there at least 50+ times. My aunt and uncle also live on a lake just 1/2 mile North of the Keshena casino.

perhaps ask one of the tribe elders to explain the basic religious beliefs and culture (to you as an outsider) as to make sure that you aren't offensive to his tribe's people and their ways.... he/she may be reluctant to do so, but may be willing to take time to talk with you if they can see your sincere intent....

the library or local college may have some resources, although perhaps somewhat out-of-date....

Lady Rev, just talk to me when you get a chance i spent 4 years having sunday church and thursday bible study with these very natives you are reaching for i can give you some ideas, and some helpful info, your servant,dt

I"m native american, and i can tell you, your beliefs and theirs are not very much different. they believe in one creator who created all, they believe in an afterlife, and they believe you have to live and die right to get there. they just call them different names, than we do.

i truely believe both ya'll and the native americans are praying to the same god

Yes Brother Doyle Pair is with the ALJC and native.He ministers in Oklahoma and loves to have anyone contact him with questions.
Sister Mona Pearson I believe is her name ministers to Native Americans I believe in the Dakotas.I will post her contact info here tommorrow.She is
a friend who ministered in our church for a conference.
