These souls were literally treated like property, less than human for sure.

Christians are also effected by the culture they live in. I remember hearing a prominent preacher denounce mixed churches because they would give way to mixed marriages and the "abomination" of mixed children. Today, we'd be aghast at such a statement. But in that day, his statements were given a hearty "Amen". Perhaps if one looks at groups such as the Quakers, they will see resistance and preaching against such social practices. But it was probably a minority on the fringe.

I believe that in spite of all the bluster about the "way things were" most of us would not find that society tolerable morally or personally if we could go back in time.

Good point. The "Democrats" were clearly the more "conservative" of the parties at that time. The Republicans were seen as being rather liberal and supportive of individual human rights. One of Lincoln's concerns was the power of banks and corporations to corrupt politics. Much of what he said about this sounds like Democratic talking points today.

As the parties have evolved, the Democrats are now the more liberal party and the Republicans are the more conservative party.

But in this case, I'm sure one will find people from either party supporting the practice mentioned above back then.
