Stage collapse in Indy
I am sure some or most have heard of the Stage that collapsed at IN State Fair right before the Sugarland Concert last Saturday night. It has been horrible for many victims families, and those who were there. The wind that night was pretty strong, where I live there was gusts over 50mph measured...before the storm. I took me by surprise, so I know it also took the State Fair officials and security somewhat by surprise.
One of the physicians I work for was at the concert and barely missed being hit. Here is his story that way on AOL news page today. Dr. Robert Klinestiver one of our pulmonary specialist was on the news because he helped those who were injured..but he and his daughter narrowly escaped being hurt. Now he is on national news.

I know there are a few here from Indy, or this area...what have been your feelings on safety.
Does anyone else have any comments... terrible thing to happen, but do you think it could have been prevented? The stage was put together by a sound company not even a mile from my home... so locally, it has effected many.
Tonight I saw on the news where the lawsuits are already going.. I hate that really.

Re: Stage collapse in Indy
Can it really be blamed on the builders, seeing that it was not poor construction? And do they have to be insured? So many questions.

yes, there are a lot of questions... I don't feel like it needs to be blamed on Mid America Sound.
I noticed on the news also that one of the funerals was at Calvary Tabernacle and Bro. Mooney was officiating. The man was one of the sound/lighting guys, and I am not sure of his relation to the church.

Re: Stage collapse in Indy
His mom and sis attended ,there are several stage designs, the one in our city which stays up all summer is a scaffold design, that was a post type truss, the former can take alot more stress and wind from my understanding.Ps, everything is insured in the millions i promise ya.I dont blame the scaffold company, but the organizers knew that storm was coming through and should have had everyone evacuated, but they waited too long.If ya watch the video, half the crowd ran ,but the wrong direction becuse the other half, upwind, just stood/sat there watching it and screaming like morons in admiration.imo.

Re: Stage collapse in Indy
The first thought I had was: "How can 65/70 mph winds topple over a stage like that?" I'm in Texas. We have our fair share of bad weather with high winds but nothing ever happening like this (with the exception of the Cowboys' practice facility incident 2 years ago, which was deemed shoddy construction.) So, my first question was the quality of the stage construction. Was it tied down with cable to stakes in the ground or some other kind of reinforcement? I'm inclined to believe it could have been prevented had a proper inspection been done. But, I suppose time and the results of any lawsuit will tell...

I don't wait for anyone to let me know when it's time to take cover. I make that call myself. Apparently, some of the people in the video have no sense of judgement when it comes to bad weather...

Re: Stage collapse in Indy
I'm really unsure about the stage, and I agree there should be inspections on the stages. There will be a lot change because of this, that is for sure.
I think there were people trying to get out of there, and I can also imagine that they officials were trying to figure out how to get that many people out quickly without them running each other over.
I have to say I was proud of the people who were there thinking of others and doing all they could to help the victims.
