South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford now claims

he was in Argentina since last Thursday. At first his wife claimed she had no clue where he was, but he had to get away to "write something". He some space from his four kids on Father's day weekend. Then his staff tried to assure everyone that he was just "hiking the Appalachian trail" but they weren't sure exactly where he was between Georgia and North Carolina.

Low and behold, he now claims today that he just decided to do something "exotic" and leave the country and head for Argentina all the while no one in SC actually knew where he was.

Apparently fighing against his state getting any of the stimulus money has really taken it's toll on the guy. He's always been a strange duck, but this has to be the topper. A sitting Govenor leaves the country without transferring power or even notifying his own staff of his whereabouts.

There's also a report today that he'd been using State Law Enforcement vehilces at weird times during the night to go by himself to places without any of his security detail with him.

I wonder if he'll still be on the list of potential candidates for the GOP in 2012? Something tells me this story isn't over yet.

It is very strange and when the facts come out, I'm sure they will be sordid. At least the story is beginning to have that feel to it.

This is what I suspected.

Gov. Sanford admits to extra-marital affair

COLUMBIA, S.C. - During a Wednesday news conference at his office in Columbia, Gov. Mark Sanford admitted to having an extra-marital affair — information that surfaced after his recent, secret trip to Argentina.

He said the relationship began with friendship, but "about a year ago, it sparked into something more than that."

Weird story, I'd agree. Also agree with PO - I don't have a good feeling about what happened in Argentina. The story doesn't add up.

What's up with these state governors? I read today VA Gov Kaine has been running around the country for the DNC, instead of doing what he was elected to do.

Hopefully the SC Gov isn't on the list of Republican Prez contenders in 2012, or the BHO nightmare will continue.

Great ... another affair. Of course it would be another Republican, "family-values" politician.

More fodder for dumb liberals who will beat this horse dead ...

Sanford said he and his wife had been "working through this thing" for some five months and that she'd been aware of the affair.

Yes! Not telling his staff/security detail of his whereabouts was one thing, but not telling his wife???? Whole New Ballgame. My husband doesn't leave the city without telling me--let alone the country.

I honestly hadn't thought that until the Argentina thing came up today. Also his wife was beginning to get a very defensive tone and saying things like, "I'm being a mother to our boys" and things like that.

Obviously, any extra-marital affair is a sad situation and I feel bad for his wife and sons. None of us are beyond sinning and hopefully the Gov. can be restored spiritually and relationaly with his family.

The bigger issue to me is the fact that he basically left the state of South Carolina without an executive figure for the last 4 or 5 days. That's unconscionable and will probably be his undoing.

Does someone who leaves the country to see his mistres and doesn't notify anyone of his whereabouts in case of a terrorist attack or other state emergency deserve to be Gov.? I don't see any way that he remains Govenor, not based on the affair, but on his irresponsiblity with his duties.

I agree--it's very negligent behavior. He wasn't serving the people of SC while he was gone, that's for sure.

His wife learned of the affair 5 months ago he claimed. I'm wondering if she actually knew where he was all along, but they weren't letting anyone on his staff or anyone on the State Gov't level know. Maybe she was allowing him to go break the relationship off with the woman in person or something.

It's a whole other issue why his wife would have let him go to Argentina to see a lady he was having an affair with, but hey the whole deal is extra weird.
