If you had no Electricity could you live?
A friend and I was talking this past week about being prepared if we were to lose all electricity. She said she was preparing now to be able to do that. I asked her what kind of things was she doing, what was she buying.
Her short list was a coffee pot that you would use if you were camping, and a manual can opener. Oh, and a grill to cook on.
I thought that was a pretty short list.
What would you think would be needed to survive without electricity?
Lighting is an area I think you would need to address. Candles can get expensive if you need them for a long period of time. I think the oil lamps are a more ecomonical way and gives better light. My husband and I are arguing over the buring of either of these are he believes they smoke up the ceiling, and I am talking little candles, here.
If you have gas then you can still cook, if not then yes you would need a grill with lots of charcoal/wood.
If you are like me and are on a well, no electricity means no water.
Maybe ILG can help us here.

We are on a well too, and we have had the power go out for long periods twice in the last few years. No water also means the toilets only flush once, but we have a swimming pool and a bucket to fix that problem and we have about 20 gallons of bottled water to drink and use for cooking. Once the power was out for about four days, other than the water and the inability to cool the house it wasn't too bad, (the other time was in the winter and we have a wood stove) I have a plastic tub full of camping gear that comes up from the basement during those times.

We are going to have a well drilled before long. We are going to have a small solar system put in place to power the well. It would, of necessity, have to be a solar system that charged a battery bank and needed electricity to run the well would come from the battery bank.
That is something you might want to consider.
We decided that we could live, albeit inconveniently, without electricity... but we cannot live without water.

Can an existing well be modified for a solar system?

We have several of the wind up flashlights for lighting. We also have a couple of coleman lanterns, a couple of oil lamps, and at least a dozen jar candles. We have a wind up radio that will keep us informed of anything that's going on (if the radio stations have back up generators to broadcast with).
We have a coleman camp stove and a gas grill for cooking. We also have a couple of dutch ovens and other things that can be used for cooking on an open fire.
I lost count of how many two liter bottles I have filled with water. We also have a pool that would become an emergency water source if needed.
You would also need foods that didn't require refrigeration. Things like TVP, dehydrated butter, etc can be purchased www.emergencyessentials.com
I'll post my list of emergency supplies later. I am needing to get ready to take the kids to youth camp to check in at 9am.

Wind up flashlight sounds interesting, did you get that at a camping store? Maybe I need to visit one soon. We are in hurricane season and last year we were without electricity for a good while. We do have a generator but you can't run it 24/7.

You won't have to modify the well system at all. You just need to know the electrical demands of the well on an ongoing basis and get a solar system capable of keeping up with it.
I assume it is AC Current... you only need to put an inverter between the batteries and the well pump and the pump will never know the difference.

Re: If you no Electricity could you live?
Have you looked into a water filtering system?

Well, ideally, you get a windmill and solar panels and make your own electricity and SELL what you don't use to the electric comapany.
