Inequality in Pay - Have you Experienced It?

Have any of you ladies experienced this? Working at a job where you had equal or even more responsibilities but were paid fewer dollars per hour which resulted in thousands of dollars less per year? Maybe men here have experienced it, too. From my view, I have only seen this as inequality/less pay for the women.

Any comments?

Hey, gloryseeker...Thanks for your reply. I was really looking at this as more from the female and male comparison - comparing them with equal skills, equal responsibilities. The numbers in 2008 are still pretty amazing.

EQUAL PAY DAY - Tuesday, APRIL 28, 2009:

http://www.pay-equity.org/day.html

I have experienced this, as being the guy getting paid more than the women.

It was 1999 in DC. I was fresh off of Active Duty and I took an "Accounting" position for the American Diabetes Assoc..

My pay was about $14.00-- which was good for me with very little college at all.

However, the position ended up being the worst job I've ever had-- excruciatingly mind numbing. All I did was keypunch numbers all day and was judged solely on how many numbers I key punched daily. No real engaging of the brain.

I was the newest guy and one of the older ladies their "befriended" me. She had been there for 15 years and made about $12.00/hr. I didn't know that when she asked me, but I found out soon after that.

Another lady was in tears and wouldn't speak to me any more. I felt so bad.

By the end of the week, I was fired. I was told that I was getting paid too much. I tried to contest it, but I was on probation anyway.

It didn't help I was the only guy in our office section either....

I believe that, as a nurse, I work more than the doctors, yet I make about 10% what they make!! So unfair!!

HO, it is great that you are a nurse with many skills. However, there is a different level of skills and responsibility that a physician has. I am referring to someone with equal education, skills, and responsibilities. (Or even the woman having more skills, responsibilities AND seniority getting paid less than the man). I never thought I'd be on a forum expressing concerns about this and plan to remain anonymous. However, I do plan to wear RED on Tuesday, April 28, 2009. That will be my way of having a mild protest.

I do agree that nurses are not overpaid by any stretch of the imagination. You deserve the pay and more.

YES!!!!! I work at the church and get paid nothing! LOL

Actually they have offered to pay me many times, but I choose not to be tied to a work schedule, and if I were getting paid for my time, I would feel obligated to be there every day. I like to work when I want!

Re: Inequality in Pay - Have you Experienced It?

The numbers speak more about women choosing to interrupt their careers with pregnancy and other domestic activity than it speaks of bias in the workplace.

However, I don't deny that it exists to some degree.

I work closely with a network of Real Estate agents. There is no doubt women are preferred and paid much more than men who try just as hard. They totally dominate the industry - even to the point where most men are driven off.

A beautiful women is favored even more... it's just a fact of life, everything is not fair. It was not under communism nor is it in capitalism.
