HaShem in the New Testament

HaShem in the New Testament.

I have a Bible called The Complete Jewish Bible. It is a translation by David H. Stern. It has a copyright of 1998.

As far as I know, the term HaShem only occurs once in this version and that is in Third John (which is called Yochanan) verse 7 which reads , "...You will be doing well if you send them on their way in a manner worthy of God, since it was for the sake of HaShem that they went out without accepting anything from the Goyim."

In Acts 5:41 it is alluded to but not actually used. Acts 5:41 reads "The emissaries left the Sanhedrin overjoyed at having been considered worthy of suffering disgrace on account of him."
A note in the companion "Jewish New Testament Commentary" for this verse says
"'on account of him,' literally, 'over the name' and therefore alternatively, 'for the sake of HaShem.' HaShem (the Name) is a euphemism for YHVH. Alternatively, the Name here stands for Yeshua..."

And of course the Sterns version uses Yeshua every single place in the New Testament rather than its English version "Jesus".

I love Jewish things...books bible studies etc...I think we have a lot to learn for future days from the Jews but of course I believe we will go through tribulation and I do not believe there are 2 churches and I believe we will reign on earth with Yahshua...(Jesus)...but it has never been a doctrine in our church just my personal opinion...Brother Alvear leaves end times open and each one can have their own thoughts and we are free to express them in a good spirit...My son Raul Jr believes we are fixing to fly away just any day...Hope he is right...

It is my understanding that "Ha Shem" means "The Name" and was used as a reference for "God" by Jewish people. God was known by different names in years gone by but the name YHWH was His special name, His covenant name, which expressed the special relationship between Him and His special people. Because of a fear of "taking the name in vain" the name represented by the 4 Hebrew letters yod, heh, vav, heh was not pronounced and in time people forgot how it was actually pronounced many years ago. Instead they referred to Him as "Adonai" (Lord) or "Ha Shem" (The Name). The KJV uses LORD all in caps for the tetragrammaton (4 letter name of God). The ASV uses Jehovah. The Jerusalem Bible uses Yahweh.

God's covenant name, YHWH, was some times used in combination with suffixes such as YHWH-jireh (YHWH the Provider) or YHWH-rapha (YHWH our Healer). When it came time for YHWH to personally visit His people in a body of flesh, He came in the name of Yeshua or Iesous or Jesus which means YHWH-Savior. When we use the name Jesus in English or Yeshua or some other form in some other language, we are calling Him YHWH our Savior and that name, YESHUA, contains and includes all of the terms He associated with Himself in the Old Testament such as YHW-nissi (YHWH our banner), YHWH-roi (YHWH our Savior) etc.

In my old 1611 KJV, He is called Iesvs because the letter "J" was not in common use in the English language and the letter "u" was written like our letter "v".

I don't read, write, or speak Hebrew so if anything I have stated here is not accurate it is because of my limited knowledge.

You are pretty much on target, Sam! The Jews believe the tetragrammaton "YHVH" to be too sacred to pronounce, so they say "Hashem" the name. For instance, when they say Baruch Hashem, they are saying "bless the name" or " bless YHVH" or we might say it, "Bless the Lord."

When I attended Hebrew School in a Synagogue for a very short time, many years ago, the class seem to get excited when I, the only Gentile, pronounced YHVH! They could never do it, but I, as a Gentile, could get away with it. The name is so sacred that the Rabbi would not even write it on the blackboard or he could NEVER erase it. They would write it L_RD and since it was not complete, they could erase it.

I attended the class because I wanted to learn more about the Jewish concept of the godhead and salvation. It was very interesting and has caused me to study the Jewishness of Christianity for well over a decade.

(Hear O Israel, the Lord, our God, the Lord, is one!) Deut. 6:4 It is the central core of all Judaism.

I will be traveling to South Korea once more on Jan. 25th to teach a 4 day pastor's conference and a Bible school on the Jewish roots of Christianity. I gave them a small sampling when I was there visiting my son, and they enjoyed it so much that they asked me to come back. The conference will be from the 28th to the 31st.
