I had opened this thread up to say these very same things. Here, it has already been said with even greater clarity than I could have said it.

Let us remember:

Psa 119:130 The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.

The principles of the ORACLES (the Word and voice) of God come only to those who are so exercised by the Word to hear the voice of God. Though there are times you may hear the voice of God which may seem audible to you, yet they are not audible. It sounds only in the spirit of man, that is addressed to the citadel of his affections. Thus, by his sanctified affections, purged by the Word of God and a life according to it, is he capable of detecting it and discerning that it is in truth the Word of the Lord coming to him.

Hbr 5:14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, [even] those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

The voice of the stranger, being many voices in the world, will appeal to affections of self and the world by which one is easily misled. However, the Word of the Lord will never mislead one.
Are you saying here that God does not speak audibly to men/women?

It probably wouldn't be audible to someone who happened to be nearby.

The perceiving of spiritual things through physical senses is a strange thing.

I have had the Lord reveal things to me through smells. I doubt if it was really a real smell, but it seemed that way to me.

For example, a while back, I walked by a young lady in our youth group during an altar service.

When I laid my hand on her to pray for her, I got "blasted" by a strong puff of marijuana smoke--or so it seemed.

I knew then that the Lord was showing me she had smoked a joint, though there was actually not the real smell of smoke on her--it just came to me that way.

So I got in her ear, and sure enough, the night before, she had gotten out with some of her friends, and they talked her into taking a puff.

She was feeling really condemned, and was ready to repent.

Needless to say, she was somewhat chagrined when Pastor "sniffed out" her sin.

I dealt with it quietly and privately, and we moved on.

I have had other experiences of God revealing things through various physical experiences, but I don't talk about it much.

I hope I don't come to regret sharing this one.

There are a few folks around that like to mock the things of the Spirit, and I don't have much time for that.

What you say here makes sense to me.

I heard my name called on a crowded bus. I looked around to see who was calling me and didn't recognize anyone and no one looked as though they were trying to get my attention.

I sat down and the Lord began to speak to me.

As Felicity says, He usually doesn't take long to say what He has to say.

As to you smelling smoke, I know of another man that that happens to. So you are not alone in that experience.

Some time back during a time of fasting, I heard a lady's voice call my name.

I recognized the voice as being a dear older sister in a church where I was once youth pastor.

I couldn't get it off my mind, so I finally called her pastor and explained what had happened, and asked his permission to call her. He gave me his permission and her phone number.

So I called, and when she answered the phone, I told her what had happened, that I heard her voice call my name and felt impressed to call her.

She began to weep...she was in bed with a back injury that was so severe that she couldn't go to work that day.

I asked if I could pray for her.

I started to pray for her over the phone, and the power of God hit her and she started talking in tongues and shouting. The phone went clattering.

When she got herself together, she got back on the phone and said she was completely healed, and on her way to work.

Her voice was audible to me, but I'm sure no one else heard it.

I have a lot more questions than answers when it comes to the works of the Holy Ghost, but these are just some things I have seen for myself.

I have heard the audible voice of God a very few times.

One time I was asleep and I not only heard my name called I felt the breath of the person in my ear.

I woke up and looked at the clock and it was time for my brother to be up getting ready for work. This was a new job for him.

I got up to make sure he was up and he had over slept.

I believe this happened for my brothers benefit as he had a family to support and he was just real tired.

That's right, if the word is to you alone. It is not audible though it may seem audible to you. You might turn to someone and ask if they heard what you heard, to which they would only deny having heard anything at all.

When Jesus was baptized, a voice spoke out of heaven but the people heard it as thunder. The message was to the whole world but the whole world did not hear. Jesus and John understood the words of the voice, "This is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased."

God still speaks from the heavens to the whole world at once. This is true though the whole world may only think that it is merely thunder and nothing more, not recognizing that there is a sound of a voice in it. But then who among us can discern the voice of the thunder? Hammmmmmmmm?

Those who know the secret place of thunder.

(See Psalm 81:7)
